Probably seen me ole Affinity "J Bass" in a post before - unsuspecting gift from wife's friend, been my only bass for the past 6 years or so. Started using it regularly with a group this past winter and after some months of practice we're getting ready for our first show in a couple weeks. Well this little Affy is great but I'm tryin to step out there looking a little fresher than this shade I like to call Beginner Blue - just makes me think of early 00s Musicians Friend catalogs lol - well there is this Rusto brand puff can at Walmart, iridescent sparkle top coat, that gave great results on some Subaru wheels and have been itching to try out on a guitar. Says to use over black base coat, looked swell on the wheels, I figured the blue is dark enough. Left the pickguard on and did the laziest deconstruction possible. 1.5 cans of enamel clear coat, they didn't have the acrylic enamel that I like. A few runs in the clear to knock down, debating to wet sand & call it a day, or roll the dice and go for the last half can of clear and another buff out - even in 90F direct sun this enamel seems to take a few days to gas off - need to practice with it on Saturday!

Really hard to capture with camera for some reason, it's a sparkling rainbow blast in person but hold camera up to it and it all goes away I don't get it! Has the same rainbow gradient as a CD I'm happy w it!! Best I could show it is with a video in link form sorry, photo upload not working great for me currently, poor service here on the homestead. I'll try later on some wifi somewhere

Does this mean you use enamel clear coat instead of a poly?

Yep just used what the Mall with no Walls had, the only gloss clear in stock "crystal clear enamel"

If so, is it easier/better?
I struggle with finishing guitars :-(

No it's awful and so do I - by now I'm developing a preference for clear coats - my success rate has been poor with Duplicolor automotive clear coat and now I think this Rusto Crystal Clear Enamel. Have seen mention online that the 2X version worked out great but it's not called enamel. Duplicolor gummed up never cured, I gave that body away. Pretty sure this bass isn't going to fully cure either, still can dig fingernail in after day 3 currently in the blazing sun. @$&#*+?$+#. However, again the Acrylic Enamel cured up nice and hard on car wheels. Can't pick at it with fingernail. "Furniture Lacquer" can from ACE dried suitably hard on a build some years ago.

So I guess I'm 2 for 4 with local puff can clear coat finishes. Only thing I've gone 2 for 2 using is the high dollar Graceys brand nitrocellulose lacquer spray cans from eBay, vintage restoration-grade stuff, tacked up hard as glass right away on both, but they're 40 bones a pop!!

I used lacquer (rusty's or krylon, can't recall) on a maple neck once and loved the finished product, BUT, where the neck contacted the wall-hanger got all discombobulated. Like the two were melting into each other, and I'm afraid to have that happen again. There's probably specific spray lacquers that won't do that, or guitar stand materials that won't. Hell, even Fender's wall-hangers say "safe for all polyurethane finishes". Thanks Fender, but that's not helping!

Yep I need to switch brands I think, been feverishly reading how Rustoleum is notorious for taking a long time to cure. She just might pull thru, another scorcher out there & put it out in the sun first thing. Seems to be hardening up -- fingers crossed it looks killer!!
