So I have been doing landscape gardening on and off for several decades and usually I don’t get stung but one guy nailed me in the neck just now.

I brushed him off and the stinger was still in him
and he was struggling on the ground.

I sat with him hoping he was OK, and eventually he flew off!! I know if the whole stinger is in me the bee dies of fluid loss.

I hope he survives.

Bee's were my first of many Phobia's. Started at a young age and we were in an old barn, when I found a Roaring's 20's Raccoon Coat. I go "Cool" and put in on. Hornets nests in the Sleeves. I got stung so many times that I remember going to Hospital for a Shot! They have liked me since and are like Dog's that they can sense your Fear. We did a Trip to Olympic Nat. Park and one chased me for hours?

The bee sting got a bit swollen, no biggie.

Every solitary bee is key for our survival though. If extinct bees don’t kill us, it would put a big dent on our life. Look at climate change, Covid, or maybe AI someday.

We lived in Santa Cruz for a couple of years when I was a 6- or 7-year-old. I was walking on a trail behind the house and apparently bumped into a wasp nest. I got stung eleven times, mainly on my @$$.

I don’t remember what, if any, meds I got, but I do remember spending the next few hours watching an old Shirley Temple movie. 😄

Are you sure it was a bee and not a wasp/ hornet.Bee’s are not usually as aggressive as the other stinging buggers.
Definitely honey bee.

It got stuck in my shirt. Mostly it’s honeybees and small Yellowjackets around here. Neither are that aggressive and both key in pollination here, but honeybee much more so.

Both have been here locally since forever.

But we have had two more recent invaders which are a certain fast growing succulent and Amazon parrots.

I wonder what it will be like thousands of years from now.

A certain very rare native cypress tree from down the coast has found favor in nurseries and is now everywhere.

Tell them to Bee Off ......

Or more like "Bee Gone!"

EDIT: At least from my immediate vicinity. I'm well aware of the precarious position the honeybees are in ATM. I haven't seen any local honeybees in Hawai'i in years. Heck I saw a bumblebee a few days ago, it literally flew between a friend and me while we were standing outside talking. I haven't even seen a bumble in a long whiles too...

Ouch!
My next door neighbor keeps bees...
Sometimes they swarm and gather in a big bunch on my fence, and a few times all were bunched up in his pear tree.

Something about the queen makes them leave the hive???
As I understand, when a new Queen is grown enough, she will look for a new place to build a hive with some of the colony in tow - hence the swarm.

We were at a friend's house one day (he kept bees) and he tells us that some of the bees were getting ready to swarm. Sure enough, we were about to get on the car and the swarm flies right around us. They had no interest in us whatsoever, but we did have a fair amount of pollen fall off on to us. It was a pretty cool experience.

I was maybe stung once from his...

It's cool to hear them buzzing like my old Boss MT-2 for about fifteen or so minutes for them to make the huge huddle.
Like a cloud about half the size of the Pear Tree, just buzzing away 'till they huddle, not even bothering me.
He puts just the bee net hat and and gloves scoops them up onto the board that slides into the box, he puts the box on the ladder, and like it's no big deal, he gets 'em all back.

He'll donate a quart of honey to the needy, (I so appreciate that!) once in a while and, a small ball of bees wax to clean up, perfect as screw lube...

I started raising bees this year. If a female worker stings you she will die as the stinger stay in you and then she loses her guts basically. A male honeybee (drone) has no stinger. A queen has a stinger but only leaves the hive to mate and then stays in the hive never coming out unless she swarms if the hive runs out of room. A wasp will not lose his stinger and will sting again. So pretty sure you got stung by a wasp. Save the bees as if they all die off so will we, research it.
