From time to time I would like to show you guy’s some of the interesting things that I encounter in my line of work. In this example you’ll see what happens to an alumium driveshaft when the front u-joint fails.

IMG_1050.JPGIMG_1053.JPGIMG_1052.JPG

If you notice a vibration that kinda goes away when you let off the gas, but comes right back when you give it gas, its usually driveline related. The same can be true for fwd CV axles or halfshafts as they are sometimes called.

So if you notice a chirpping noise at take off and parking lot speeds , or the above mentioned vibration, get it checked by a competant mechanic.

In case your curious, theres a four foot foam plug that goes inside this one for noise control. Im keeping that. Just the right density for mounting pickup’s. Ha

Wow. I owned a Land Rover Discovery II for about two months. One of the major problems with them was this issue. The U joints fail and the drive shaft starts spinning wildly underneath like a metal ninja. It was learning about that issue that made it one of the many reasons I dumped it quickly.
I had a disco 300tdi, Iand had the drive shaft let go whilst I was towing a trailer full of sheep. It was very exciting as parts of the outside of the car tried to gain access to the inside lol!!!! £35 and an hour on my back underneath it sorted it, I shall certainly pay attention to that knocking sound in the future...

Driveline vibrations can lead to terrible things. About five years ago I ran a road call at work. The driver of the bus said the transmission fell out. Now the drivers that operate these vehicles are not always the smartest people and they sometimes says some pretty crazy stuff that isn’t anywhere close to what really happened, so when I left the shop I wasn’t sure what I was going to find, but I was pretty sure the transmission didn’t fall out.

I was wrong! The funny thing is, while I was cleaning this mess up, a lady walking down the sidewalk said “don’t you think the driver should have known something was wrong before this happened?”.

Years ago I saw a car that was in the road and propped up in the air by its driveshaft. I think it caught a hole in the road (likely, since this was in Indiana). That had to have been an exciting ride for someone.

I think it’s funny that over here LR’s are seen as fragile, frighteningly expensive toys for rich ladies to take to the mall, and this guy was hauling animal trailers with his. Oh, and NOTHING on a Landie over here, can be fixed for $50... :)
There’s a farm right by me, that’s had a Disco sitting in its front yard long enough for small trees to grow next to it. I’ve thought (briefly) about asking about it, but my wife would make me live in it if I dragged that home...

They definitely have both of those issues over here! Definitely unreliable, and DEFINITELY favoured as a Chelsea Tractor by a certain kind of School Mum! I love that I get paid to do with mine what THOSE people wished they could do with theirs... if they ever left suburbia!!!!

Remember that nut & bolt we found after installation? ;)

LOL!! That’s exactly what it was! This bus had some engine work done by a vendor. The trans had been pulled to do the work and when it went back in the bell housing bolts were never tightened. Once enough fell out, it just ripped the rest of them out of the holes. Caused a lot of damage.

Cars based on the rear-engined Fiat 600 and 850 have been roadraced for over 50 years. With good prep, they redline and shift at no less than 8000 RPM, with a few stressed examples going past 9500. If the flywheel shears off at that RPM, the flywheel ring gear saws through everything and the engine, supported by only a single mount, comes out of the back of the car with a great rending of sheet metal. I didn't see it happen, but I saw the aftermath with a dead car on the main straight and it's engine at least 100 feet back.

Edit: Ok, after some actual reflection and more coffee, I didn't see "the moment," but heard it and turned to see the car slow down. The actual separation of engine and transaxle was surprisingly quiet, with an impressive "bang" of the engine knocking out the back panel of the car as it exited.

I happened to be going past this on my way to work today. I actually pulled in to ask, and the farmer ran out of the barn, yelling at me to get the F off his land... so, I’m safe from acquiring another project. :)
All the farms around here have IH or Deere equipment, and this guy has “Mahindra” and CLAAS stuff... also everything around me is corn and soybeans, and this guy has Geese and carrots and such...

You can pick up Discos on the cheap but be prepared to pour money in them. I went from a TJ wrangler to a Disco II and back to a Wrangler. It lacks the luxury but I’m at 245k and the biggest repair I’ve had in about three years was $80 on a starter that i installed in about 30 minutes. You have to plan on four figures a year in regular maintenance on a Disco.
