Hey guys i need some advise. I have never bought a neck for a guitar. I think i might need a new neck for my jazzmaster.

I wouldn't mind buying a jazzmaster specific neck, but do stratocaster necks work just as well?

I might look at less expensive necks from a place like EY guitar parts. They have some nice vintage tinted maple ones that are listed as 'stratocaster necks'.

Seeing as they're the same scale lenght would these also work on a jazzmaster? Are their 'butts' the same?

Tele is the only one with a squared heal. All the others are a bit rounded and won't sit deep enough without a bit of routing where the heel of the neck goes into the pocket.

I've seen JM necks on Strats and Tele necks on Strats..
A strat neck should fit a JM..
The heel on a tele is squared off while a Strat Is rounded..But can be made to work..

ya that's what i thought. There's a neck you can often come across on ebay which is a 'jazzmaster neck' that comes off a squier telecaster special. It's kind of misleading calling it that.

I have wondered why they list it that way to im sure it doesn't say jazzmaster on the headstock. whats up with your neck that it needs replaced ?by golly I just looked and it does say jazzmaster on decal I never noticed it. maple board though if they used rosewood better.

Yea Tele necks will go in a Strat with no problem, the heel is actually shorter, it's just when you go strat to Tele the strat heel won't sit far enough without a bit of work.

there's definitely something 'up' with the truss rod. For one thing it's very stiff. Like i really have to put my strength into it to make it turn. Secondly the nut is really deep in the slot. The hex key i have barely fits in, and when i use the long end then i am not able to turn it as again it's just so stiff.

I don't know if there's critical problem, but i know something isn't right. I think i should probably take it in to get it checked by a luthier. Just to even know what the problem is.

I am wondering, does a truss rod/truss nut need liquid lubrication sometimes? If so can someone tell me what kind of lubricant to try?

With your neck, remove the nut and put a washer under it, alot of times the wood under the nut it tightens against will collapse and cause the problem your having. You make have to use more than one. That's just a guess, it's hard to diagnose online. The only difference in a Strat and Jazzmaster neck is the headstock, Jazzmasters have always had the same uunique headstock and strats have had a couple different ones, the Jazzmaster never got the big headstock, it's always had kind of a medium one

it sounds like its maxed out so careful at that. does the truss rod give relief when backed off..the washer will add some help but its only gonna tighten so far till end of thread. are strings pretty high at 5th fret I assume so.if a straight edge laid on fret board looks straight with no bow in it the truss is doing the job. I would even shim it to increase angle in neck a little no harm in trying and free.

"the Jazzmaster never got the big headstock"..
I think you'll find just the opposite to be true..

It was never as big as the the other models, it kinda had a medium sized one. It wasn't the normal small headstock, but it wasn't the big one either. Kinda always had its own thing.

Among the several guitars that Jimi Hendrix is famous for,...A white Strat body attached to a Blonde Tele neck''Woodstock or Atlanta Festival'',..and Ed King of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Incense and Peppermint-''Electric Prunes'' fame '' both of whom shared their wares and Ed even had a super Custom Sunburst with an unique blending system that is highly noted and sought after to this day for an unreasonable cash request!

You can really put about any neck or body to the other just as long ax the scale length is correct. You may have to do some minor modifications. I have done a few,

So if you are replacing it, would you do anything different than what's there now? Like go maple?

i don't know.

I don't want to replace it and i still intend on taking it to a luthier to get a professional opinion.

But if i do end up buying another neck i don't really care if it's maple or rosewood. Love the rosewood on it now, but maple ALWAYS suits a black guitar in my opinion. I would focus more on the price of the neck rather than the type of wood.
