I need to get back to playing bass, I haven't played in a few months and the band wants to practice this weekend.
I've been noodling around learning this one from the 2000's.

I grab about 4-6 songbooks at a time from the library and just start going through them page by page. When I get to a tune I know really well, I'll work on it for a few days. If it's not fun or I have too much trouble with it, I skip it for now. Recently, I've learned to play these tunes reasonably well but not perfectly:

    Bowie's Space Oddity
Van Morrison's And It Stoned Me & Caravan
    Beatles Blackbird
    Bob Marley Redemption Song
Zeppelin's Over the Hills, Black Dog (and Stairway, don't judge me)
    RHCP's Under the Bridge
Edgar Winter Group Free Ride (love that opening lick)
Kansas Dust in the Wind (again, don't judge, me, I just need to work on my finger-picking!)
Animals House of the Rising Sun (also to work on my picking)
Santana's version of Tito Puente's Oye Como Va
    John Lennon Woman
Rod Stewart Maggie May (mainly learning Beck's two solos)
and about six different Doors tunes, which I generally find to be both easy and fun

I understand the necessity of learning songs to play as a way of, well, learning to play. But so far I've been concentrating on scales, trying to improve basic technique and learn my way around the fretboard.

But when I feel the time is right, I'm going to learn how to play Robbie Blunt's work on Big Log by Robert plant. This is gorgeous, understated guitar work. This is how I want to play, this is the type of vibe I'm after...

Yeah, Carl is an amazing teacher as well as Marty Schwartz,,,,If I had youtube when I was a lot younger, I'd be a more cultivated and skilled player, without a doubt. I learned so much in the last few years from Youtube.

I don’t know if it counts as a song, but yesterday I put together the ending credits song from WKRP. Love that tune but don’t try to sing it. ;-)

Not just a great song, but man there aren’t many great songs that feature the Strat and use it’s traits so well. Also I love a writer who appreciates the empty space!
