It has gotten to the point where to make some room I must store some guitars in the attic. I know that there are a variety of opinions on this practice, so I thought I would check in here. We live in a fairly mild climate and I was thinking only of my second-tier solid bodies. Your thoughts?
no basement space? Usually when I think of no basement, I think mid west, west Texas, and those are far from a mild climate.
In the absence of knowing what your circumstances are, I think I'm with Eddie here. It may be an opportunity to "thin the herd".
No... Attic’s are designed to be within 20° of the current outside temperature, and that is if they are a modern design, with proper ventilation. Even in a moderate climate, the daily temperature swings are too great for almost any instrument, a basement is a much better place, because the temperature swings are mild. Unless your attic is insulated/finished/temperature controlled If not, follow the recommendation of the Wilbury’s:
I converted a walk up attic to a bedroom last year. Proper ventilation, insulation, and zoned heat make it comfotrtable 8 months of the year.May June July and August the ac runs just about all he time.I would not keep any guitars in there otherwise.Basement, closet, under a bed would be better.
I wouldn’t store any guitars in the attic. I kind of agree with the others. If you have guitars that you are willing to put away for long periods, maybe it’s time to get rid of some. Or figure out a better way of keeping them in your house. Do you have them hanging on the walls yet? That frees up room and looks cool! I love how we are always here to help each other!
I would love to hang my guitars on the wall. Once I get a place that will be our home for the next hopefully decade or more, and is not a leased place, I want to do this. As long as I have it humidity controlled then I'm good.
