Hi all , i have a Super Champ XD and it is putting out a real dirty sound on both channels, gain is backed off . Could this be a bad tube or another problem . Thanks .
It could be a tube, so you could try replacing them. If it's anything else you may be SOL, because it's very hard to find anyone that will work on them, and I think replacement parts are no longer available. They have a history of the digital board suddenly dying.Hi all , i have a Super Champ XD and it is putting out a real dirty sound on both channels, gain is backed off . Would you just try replacing the 12xa7 tube and not the 6v6 tubes . They are pricey .It could be a tube, so you could try replacing them. Try that first, and if it doesn't help, then buy the cheapest 6V6, and try it in both positions. But, before any of that, first try cleaning everything with contact cleaner, all the pots, jacks, tube sockets, etc., and try reseating all the tubes.Would you just try replacing the 12xa7 tube and not the 6v6 tubes . OK, Thanks .Also try unplugging and replugging all the ribbon cables.
I didn't see this thread when you started it, but for the future, if anyone else needs help with this issue, it only makes sense that it would be the output tube, the "preamp" tube is very unlikely to cause that, because it's not used like a standard preamp tube in these amps.Just an update to my amp problem. It was a bad output tube 6v6. Replaced both tubes and she's now singing the "blues" lol. Thamks for the reply's .
It is used as a driver tube and phase splitter for the power tubes, which actually stresses it more than when used as a preamp, because it has to not only provide voltage gain but the current required to drive the power tubes properly, which is why a different dual triode from the same family, like as 12AT7, which is capable of less voltage gain, but can produce more current than a 12AX7, is often used as the driver/phase splitter, rather than a 12AX7, because most of the voltage gain in those amps is provided by the SS op-amps. But, even in all tube amps, it's very common to see 12AX7s used in the preamp for voltage gain, and 12AT7s used as the driver and phase splitter.I didn't see this thread when you started it, but for the future, if anyone else needs help with this issue, it only makes sense that it would be the output tube, the "preamp" tube is very unlikely to cause that, because it's not used like a standard preamp tube in these amps.
