Cohorts. Steve Hunter is a prolific session guitarist. On his site are (2) Squier Steve Hunter model "prototypes."

    http://www.stevehunter.com/gear.html
    • The body seems to be modified from a typical Strat and has horns that are symmetrical, or nearly so.
    • The tail of the body is like an offset.
    • Big headstock neck with bullet truss rod nut.
    • Unique pickguard.
    • Bridge pickup mounted like a left-handed Strat.
    • Master volume and tone controls with the switch between them.
I can speculate as well as anyone, but does anyone have any knowledge about these? I find no evidence that these ever went into production.

I find some discussion on a competing forum. Mostly complaints about the design, but no info. Apparently Steve had offered one or both of these for sale.

I think they look pretty cool.
Looks like a shorter scale, maybe.
One is trem the other is hard tail.
The red is pretty sweet looking in my opinion.

    Are they upside down Mustanges?
    edit....
    it's not...i just compared.

It does look very similar to the first Mustang which was symmetrical, before it became an offset. It kinda looks like a G&L too, but I forget which model, maybe the SC3?

Is it just the angle of the pic....but, the red one looks rightside up....and the black one looks upside down. Right??

Right! I hadn't noticed that. The red one is angled like a Fender offset body and the black one is the reverse of that.

I'm kinda glad they didn't produce these things.

Like that harp guitar below the Squiers! Michael Hedges created some amazing music on one!

We do still have both prototypes, they were made for Steve when there was talk of him having his own signature model in the 90’s. That never happened but he kept the prototypes. He still uses them to record occasionally. K

Wow!! I don't suppose you could take more detailed high resolution pics so we can see more and tell you where and when we think they might be made?

The black one is "craftet in Japan" with serial number S034977. It has the same funky neck plate like the Squier vista super sonic.

Neither of these do anything for me, but their existence is really interesting!

That would be appreciated. As we're Squier geeks, we're interested in the esoterica when we happen upon it.

That's so cool that Steve's wife joined our forum just to talk to us about those guitars! Thanks Karen. I didn't know until today that you guys live in Spain!

Steve has the String Change Buddy that you can buy from him. It keeps the ball ends from coming off the posts on your Bigsby when changing strings.
