Just picked up one of these used...a lovely guitar, but woah the tuners suck wolf's cookies big time! (the backlash is outlandish)

Is there a prescribed upgrade path for replacing the tuners? I don't want to replace cheap nasty tuners with cheap nasty aftermarket tuners...so looking for recommendations for a decent replacement.

You turn the tuner to tighten the string, then decide to turn the tuner to untighten a little (i.e. a typical tuning a string action)...the tuner doesn't react until you turn it a little way back ...essentially terrible play/wear in the mechanics of the tuner...

(I don't believe it#s wear...the guitar is immaculate & not old enough to have that type of wear...so I think that the stock tuners are of low quality)

It's the gap between the gears. If it's too large the tuning gets sloppy.

I've been using Wilkinson EZ-LOK tuners for a while now and I've been pleased with their performance. Depending on whether they're 6 inline like a Strat or Tele or 3X3 like a Les Paul is how you find what you need. Oh and that's if your tuners holes are modern 10mm size not vintage. If they're smaller vintage they make tuners as well. The price is approximately $26. The Stratosphere carries these tuners.

Wilkinson makes good tuners, and I also recently put a set of Hipshots on. They were a little bit more money, but really nice. And they mount without any screws, so that’s nice if your stock tuners have a different screw hole pattern.

    Hey, I was wondering...
Are wolf's cookies poo, or are they a body part of said wolf? Not familiar w that expression. Good luck w your tuner swap! Thanks...

I swapped squier tuners out of 1 & put in fender locking tuners.
    Easy change
GC even gave me $120 trade in value because it had those in it.
Probably would have only got $50-$60 if it didn't have them

I have no idea...I once read it on a guitar forum (about 10yrs ago) ....it wasn't said in a positive way & it has stayed with me ...it may start snowballing & enter the guitar-centric lexicon "Man, that strat copy sucks wolf's cookies"

I thought tuners were the problem on my brand new bullet tele, but replacing the crappy plastic nut with a tusq nut made a WORLD of difference with tuning, stability, and tone on open chords. Highly recommend replacing the nut before replacing the tuners.

THAT, and not much else, is what a good cut nut is supposed to do. Tuners ? 99% of the time doing a good job.

The tuners are holding their tune, it just makes tuning the guitar an unpleasant user experience....i.e. tightten the string...ooops too much, ok loosen the string off via the tuner tuner......eeugh, 1/4" of play before the tuner starts doing its work.

I’m sure we’ve all heard “always tune up”, it’s even more important with budget tuners. I’ve seen Squiers with the issue you’re talking about but just using the tune up and never down method helped a lot. I’ve never felt the need to upgrade any of my Squier’s tuners, prefer to spend on a nut or electronics personally.

There was talk on here several weeks ago about some small locking washers you could pick up at a hardware/home improvement store that when installed inside the tuners made them tighter and more responsive. There was also a YT about installation.

I have not tried it myself, but I am interested in giving it a shot.
