Well, what was supposed to be a 10 month wait, turned out to be 9 days. I don't know where MF found it, but it arrived today and it checks out. It was not a return, used or anything else. Brand spanking new, packaged from the factory with all the protective plastics in place.

Way out of tune, and a very dry fretboard. Stretched out the strings, breaking the high E in the process, checked the truss rod and ran it through the amp. Pots roll off well, and though the P90s are way too high for my taste, it sounded real good.

Removed the strings, finished and polished those very dull and scratchy frets. Oddly enough, the frets have no sprout, and are also not sharp (unlike the frets on my 2020 Epi P-90). Cleaned and conditioned the fretboard with Dunlop 65, the board is in much better condition now.

I'll string it up with 9s tomorrow, along with setting the truss rod and string height. I'll take better pictures in the coming days...

It is interesting to note that with soft even lighting, the worn black finish simply appears flat. But with more direct and sharper lighting, the finish begins to show off some figuring (if that's the correct term). Either way, makes little difference to me. It's black, it's not glossy (especially the neck) and it's here to be played.

Now, the porn (simple pics for documentation purposes):

i think they're the awesome little guitars... i've got two, both in TV Yellow. one is a 2012, the other a 2020. i'd love to get one in black like yours, and one in the cherry/wine red. it's the only guitar i wouldnt mind having multiple copies!

    I also have two.

I love that they let go of the veneer on those babies. Almost tempting to get another one just for that. If I had a black one, I'd try buffing it to a shine. I've seen one when they came out 10 years ago and it looked great with the grain really popping out.

Is your 2020 the set neck Inspired by Gibson ? If so, be prepared to like your bolt-on neck better ... I do. So is my 2018 bolt-on neck. My 2020 is for sale.

I had one of these a few years ago. Fun guitar. really light which was a nice change from the Boat anchor Epi les Paul I had at the time. I really liked the finish, it grew on me over time. A real ***** for fingerprints but I liked the the way the gain was visible through the matte finish. In the end It wasn't getting played So I moved it along to a guy who really liked it.

I had s 2016 red cherry model I bought for $60 on Offerup. It was literally unplayed. I took the pickups out and put them in my Fender Mustang 90. The Epi pickups sounded way better than the Fender.

I like mine too. Wanted TV Yellow, but there was like a 1.5 year wait. I cancelled, but was offered an in stock worn black with a discount. Then got a 20 dollar credit for a scratchy switch, so I got it for $129.

Epiphone says they're alnico magnets, though they don't specify what type. Mine were wax potted. They sounded like P-90 pickups are supposed to sound.

LOL ... classic switch problem. Deoxit is your friend here. Like any mechanical part, it needs maintenance. Spray it once or twice a year and it'll be functional as long as the rest of the guitar.

Nice guitars. I first had a worn black with the P-90’s that I picked up cheap at a pawn shop. Not being a fan of black guitars (or cars and clothes) I moved it along after I bought a new one in yellow. Also bought a faded red with HB’s. That one a donated to a 15 year old son of one of my wife’s friends. He lost his father and has some health issues and wanted to learn to play guitar.

The Epi P-80’s are albino according to Epi and sound just how P-90’s should sound. Some like them better than the Gibson P-90’s.

Fun guitars to play for sure and many, myself included believe that the simple wrap around bridge with no moving parts adds a certain magic to the sound.
