After reading form months on these forums about how underrated SE strats are, I decided to get this guitar from FBM as soon as it popped up for $40.

I thought it was an SE from the pictures (black finish, STRAT on the headstock, no truss rod insert), but I'm not 100% sure now that I have it in my hands.

Can you help me identify it?

Here are the details (and pictures):
    - 21 frets
    - 42mm nut width
    - 43-44mm body thickness
    - No serial number on the back of the headstock or plate
    - No serial number or date in the neck pocket

Whatever the case the guitar looks really good for $40 and it seems it has barely been played.
Added bonus: the neck has quite a bite of flaming going on!

that looks like a SE headstock so I'm guessing the rest of it is also an SE. It doesn't have the usual white pearloid pickguard but there were others available.

    I also say SE.

Serial number stickers fall off of SEs all the time.

  5. 100% Squier SE. Would have had a sticker type serial number staring with CAE. Some did not have the prefix. These where often removed or over time, fell off.
These where made for the pack sets in the early 2000's. I sense some mods coming on. ;)
    Cheers, Barrie.

    HNGD!

As other correctly stated, a CAE SE whose sticker has been MIA for years. All the black SEs I have owned had pearloid pickguards although some had white such as yours. I do not know exactly where/when/why. And yes, SEs are known for having terrific necks. You have a winner!

  7. The first released versions of the black SE's all had the plain white pg's. Pearloid came later on and then where used exclusively once the CXS versions came out. This being the case for North American offerings. Some have beautifully aged white pg's.
    Cheers, Barrie.

Thank you everyone for helping me confirm it was indeed one of the famous SE strats!

I finished cleaning and setting it up properly, it took a little more attention than usual but it turned out really well:
    - Had to add a ton of relief to the truss rod in order to get the neck right with 9 gauge strings (I wonder what were they using before).
    - Opened up the neck screw holes in the body to avoid binding, and dumped a sand paper shim in the pocked
    - The action was laughably high, but after adjusting the saddles almost all the way down, and with the shim in the neck it is now nice and low

Here are a couple of extra pictures of the finished guitar and its nice looking neck

You definitely did good on that one. That neck is worth more than what you paid for the whole guitar, I love flame maple necks.

    Wait, does that say free?!
Was it? Are you only allowed to use it at church sessions or something?
