I have heard it said that a strat neck can be installed on a Telecaster. Is this so, and are there any issues to consider?

The heal of a Strat has a carve and the Tele neck is straight.

That's how I understood it. The reason I ask is that I'm finding that after market replacement necks are usually cheaper if they are strat cofig. Is there any reason to NOT use a strat neck? Shooting is another hobby of mine and I know how to bed actions, filling those corner gaps with epoxy putty would be exactly the same process...

I don't think you need to fill those gaps. If you have a solid fit at the back and bottom of the pocket I think you're good.

It's more of a cosmetic concern than a functional concern.

That said... How much are you looking to spend on the neck? Warmoth's prices for Strat vs Tele are the same as are Allparts, WD, and MightyMite. There's plenty of Tele necks at every price point.

I really can't spend an amount on a neck that would buy a couple good Chinese guitars. I can't justify buying a neck that plays 100 times better than I can.

I buy the cheap Kmise necks on ebay. They pretty much work well for me.

Well, a good playing neck makes you a better player. I used to run a lesson department with 1000 students (between all instruments, not just guitar) and we could draw a straight line between the kids that had good guitars and stuck with it and the kids with garbage guitars that gave it up.

Also... Here's some necks in order of descending price.

I just typed in "Tele neck" and set the max price to $100. If that's the price of a couple good Chinese guitars... ‍[IMG]

Hey don't overlook GFS! There are usually some necks under the "GFS Basics" at good prices - b0th tele & strat config:

That took some chisel work on the pocket, no?

Nope. I had a "mule" like this and just bolted up with gap at the bottom. It was a great player too! here is a pick of mine:
