Is the used market kaput?

There's nothing in my area that I'm interested in but things seem to be moving. Always new stuff and the stuff that I favourite (no intention of buying) disappear after a week or so. This reminds me I've been meaning to sell some stuff too.

Guitars at least, the amps I have an eye on are sitting. They're all Vox amps and are at selling prices that are maybe 75% retail.

Lots of gear here on Facebook, but it’s not selling. eBay sales are even really slow for music gear now.
That’s because people are just trying to eat and drive to work.

With the sore used car market, it’s almost impossible for anyone making under $50k not to have a car note. I looked the other day and nothing at carmax was below $15k.

Not to mention the inflated real estate bubble. We bought our house in 2015 for $116k and our neighbors sold last year for 290k !

I have 4 kids and we’re highly blessed to have have started our family 10 years ago. Locked in a good mortgage/interest rate and paid off the cars. No wonder people are reluctant to have kids let alone a big family.

It’s a good thing we all like squire cause that’s all I can afford right now!

A short while back I posted 3 Strats on the ST for sale area.

I put a Classic Vibe 50s on for $275 and all I got was, will you take $200 and pay the shipping. 🖕💩

I sold one Contemporary Strat and kept the other 2 Strats.

Now, I posted my Gibson LP Classic GoldTop on the LP sister site and got my asking price.

I’ll not be selling by running ads or posts, just to those I already know.

Buying new is almost like being part of the problem. On one hand I'm buying a Firefly acoustic for $229, and on the other I'm trying to sell a $550 Ibanez acoustic for $375..........then complaining about it.
This is why I went straight after sub $ 150 music gear. I knew I could be lured with their bright, shiny objects & trinkets at higher prices and then realized I was overextended financially, that I could play Epiphone, Squier & Monoprice $ 25-150 guitars the same as I could Fender/Gibson for thousands more. I can eat steak & lobster for a celebratory meal for winning the "keep my hard earned cash" game of life, capping the night off with a cup of coffee & jam session with a crappy guitar, that actually is a solid daily player, that even sounds incredibly good.

I agree on Craigslist stuff. I had a strat neck that was brand new for a project that I canceled that took months to move. Facebook marketplace is inconsistent as of late as people list stuff and don't return messages. I found a pretty nice squier Nashville style classic vibe telecaster for sale locally there and the guy apparently was on vacation. Turns out someone took over and compromised his FB account and was posting nonsense to it and derailed all his marketplace listings. Offer up has been stagnant here as well. The other thing we have approaching is tax time and I've noticed stuff doesn't move the closer we get to April 15th.

There’s still deals out there, but lord they’re hard to find! Selling has been insanely slow here too. I get it though, people have more important stuff to spend their money on. Some day, that will change again and the market will be different. I’ve always stayed loyal to my own rules: I never buy stuff I can’t afford, so I usually don’t need to sell quickly to get my money back. I like waiting for deals, but waiting to sell is harder lol

According to my property tax assessment, and what recent sales have been in the bldg., my tiny 300 sq. ft. one room studio apartment is worth $290K! If I didn't own the place, and it wasn't paid for, I couldn't afford to live here. They rent for more than my entire monthly SS check, which is my only source of income. Thankfully we have the lowest property taxes in the nation, but we make up for it by everything else costing more here than on the mainland.

I just had something sell on Reverb. Nothing local.

I also contacted two sellers for cheapo Squiers with no response.

I decided to try to list some guitars for trade. Most of the trade offers I receive are worthless garbage.

It's a glut of too much gear in my opinion. Over the pandemic too many people bought too much gear they never played and now it's all hitting the market. too much supply and not enough demand so unless you're willing to sell at a loss then buyers will simply wait it out. I've been trying to sell a couple guitars on Reverb for fair prices (even below what similar others are listed at) and they have been sitting there with the occasional insulting lowball offer.

In my area CL and Marketplace have literally nothing to offer but I can't speak on that because I don't know. It's just been that way for a very long time for whatever reason.
