I'm looking into possibly getting a mini electric guitar today. I have my sites on one for $100 shipped, Explorer Style. Looks cool, seller said it has amazing action and sounds awesome with one humbucker bridge pickup. Would be great for vacation etc.

I enjoy playing the Squier Mini and half size Encore Strats.

I got a Squier mini and a Squier 3/4 size that I keep around. The Squier mini I have it wound with 11’s Flat wounds and it stays in tune and was able to intonate it. 11’s on a mini doesn’t pull to much tension like you would think. On the Short scale I went with 10’s work well .

If you were Canadian, it would be tuned to 'EH'

I have four of them. Kind of cool, but more of a novelty than anything else. Great to throw in van for vacation trips. One of the red Strats I have strung up with 4 strings, tuned like a ukulele. Not near as cool as I thought it was going to be! LOL

Check SGW. They normally have a lot of mini Squiers on there for pretty cheap. $100 seems like a lot to spend on one.

Their sound is apparently an aquired taste. Not a sound that I'm happy with.

I would not be willing to pay $100 for a First Act ME3063, or any other short scale FA.

I’m gonna pick up my daughter a mini Strat or JM but want it to tuned to E standard for the sake of teaching and playing together. I’ve read that stringing it with 11s gives the tension of a regular scale guitar on the minis - has anyone experimented with that?

That's fine for you, but it will hurt her fingers and she won't want to play. I put 9s on for the kids, they don't have hand strength or hard finger tips to deal with 11s.

Of course Grandad gets to play them too..

You’re saying 11s on a 3/4 will hurt more than 9s on a full size Strat?

You said the Encore is tuned to A, what do you have the Strat Mini tuned to?

So in researching being partial to Ibanez, I'm looking at a new Ibanez GRGM21L Series.. $100 New. Free ship, plus tax. I like the shark tooth inlays a lot over the regular maple neck. It may be a done deal today. Ya really can't go wrong with Ibanez Guitars in my opinion, and the price is right.

Yes, 11s hurt more than 9s on anything, even a mandolin, because they require higher tension to reach pitch. The Sqiuer Mini is standard tuning.
