That thing is sweet! If it were mine I would take the rest of the paint off and go Au Natural

If the fretboard is really foul, lighter fluid is the go.

Was thinking the same, Ken and Acidehouse? was suggested as well...but want the binding to stay on as well. The paint is pretty much just chipping and flaking off.

So weird but I was thinking the same thing. Go natural with like a nice boiled linseed oil rubdown.

I saw Bon Jovi tonight and one of the guitarists had a natural Explorer. Man that thing was sweet.

    Seriously though...what a cool guitar.

If it were me I'd leave the finish. It's genuinely road worn.....that's so cool.

surfrodguitar.....SO COOL!!!!!....so much to say...Those Ibanez "Butterfly" pickups ( AKA Super 80's) are awesome!!!.(looking anyway)..have not seen them in years......(hint#1).......

    Yeah, It's a mess.......BUT.....you got something there..;)......(????)

Those 45 rpm discs could pay freight for that "Hulk", and restoration/modification.....(hint#2)....whichever you choose.....maybe......

Heck, I dunno.....I'm Glad you GOT it........eager to see what happens.....

By The Way, I'm a fan of natural finishes...or that one could stay pretty much the same, and then you could say...."Hey, I didn't do that....I just resurrected it"..

Hmmmmm..........I'm hoping for updates......plenty help around here, as you know..................YOWZA!!!!.......................willhowl;)

Ok, My forensic opinion on the damage...........as if anyone asked me....the Idi....err.....former owner was frustrated, and just threw it around the room, in fits of rage, and then.....started all over again..........

Or Not......See what you can do, srg...........willhowl

    P.S. I ain't kidding about the vinyl...( records)......there be $$ there.....MAYBE!!!......

P.P.S. Went back to the control cavity pic.....All wires shielded except grounds......YEAHHHHH!!!

There might be some $$ in the vinyl, there's also some Victor and Victrola 78s as well, I have to do more research on it and plus I really want to listen to em all. And a sealed box that says General Maccarthur, not sure what's on the vinyl cause there no description. IMG_8033.JPG I also got some StarWars and Elvis cards from 1977 Hahah, it was kinda a American Pickers scenario, guy open garage full of junk/gems and had a bit of a hard luck story so picked up more than I had set out.

Personally I would keep the finish as is. The guitar has lived and the finish tells the story.
The Solder joints all look original , so the pickups, pots etc are all as they came about 40 years ago. Put some tuners on it, a brass nut and string it up (after the cleaning session) and see what you got.
Those are sought after pickups by some.
    Then....
    Enjoy

I bought an Black Ibanez AR50 new in 81 - I think I couldn't afford the Iceman or the Artist, as I recall... I fantasized about a triple pickup Iceman for years (don't think they made one). See attached photo-shop thing. How bout doing this project up like this?? Best of luck!

Nice!! That's a lot of tonal options! Just a update, I glued and clamped up the fretboard, the neck was very back bowed, the truss was cranked up! Working on cleaning the body now, lots of sludge! Here's some nasty pics! IMG_8060.JPG IMG_8062.JPG IMG_8069.JPG IMG_8070.JPG IMG_8071.JPG

Looking good, now I'm getting excited to start my Iceman restoration. I wish mine had the pickups that came with it.:)
