yep - was cutting the nut on one of those Fender replacement necks. Neck comes with the nut already installed, but it has "pilot grooves" to get you started in cutting the slots to the proper depth.

I have done this a few times before, and have used those welding tip cleaners -- wanted to get the real-deal set of nut files and have a try this time w/ the files.

Well, the files cut really well, and evenly - but on both the Low-E and the A string grooves, a chunk of the nut split off while I was filing

The GOOD news is the nut still seems to perform just fine even w/ the missing chunks -- all strings are correct at the nut, 1st fret, and 12th fret, she is staying in tune nicely

I also have replacement nuts on hand if it really starts to bother me :)

After reading only the title, I was going to suggest to get a nut cracker. Would be more efficient and less painful.

Don't you hate it when that happens! I've done that a couple times. If I'm happy with the way rest of the nut turned out I usually just take some of dust from cutting shaping and mix it with super glue to fill the hole.

I bought a mid-70s SG clone from an Inuvialuit buddy back in the '80s, and he had made an epoxy repair to it.

It still works just fine so I'm keeping that nut for the nostalgia.

I broke the low E end off my Tokai's nut 29 years ago. I found the missing chunk in the carpet and super-glued it back on. It's still workin'. :)

They come with cheap plastic nuts. Best thing you can do is spend $10 and replace it with a Tusq or bone one. It will make an instantly noticeable difference.

Actually, it chipped off at just about the right height. Your nut slots should be no deeper than half the diameter of the string. The nut's fine and still needs some material off the top all the way across.

I may have to take you up on that! The fine fellas south of the border didn’t quite get the E string slot right.
