They're pretty inexpensive on CB Gitty. I'd just order one.

I made for a Vietnam War Veteran The eblem was his Special Forces Unit. I used pine for the neck with no truss rod and glued a hardwood fret board to it. I took a green beret emblem and applied it to the head stock. I think red oak or rosewood on pine would be fine!

Is there any issue with different rates of expansion due to moisture or temperature?

Dan Erline made a pine Tele with no truss rod. With the grains going in different directions no noticeable relief changes. This cigar box was mainly built for display purposes, he built a trophy case for it and put it in his living room. For your neck I would buy a thrift store Strat for 20.00 or you could trace a Strat neck and go fretless! I made a few this way, I would use a strat neck and I would put a slab of pine with a neck pocket inside the cigar box, the same thickness as Strat. The string relief is the same as a Strat just, find a hex bolt the same height as your strat bridge. I also like using hard tail or a Tele bridge or piezo just above the bolt (bridge). The poor mans hollow body.

Are you a stranger to fretting?

That's what stopped me, fretting frets.
