Maybe if I start posting in here, I’ll actually finish my last couple projects. I’ve managed to not buy any more to start, so that’s something anyway... I finally quit my weekend job (I worked 7 days a week from Dec 28, 2019 until this past Saturday )so I actually may have time to work on these, too...
I particularly want to see that Bullet HST come back to life. You may provoke me into working on mine! I've got cracked veneer faces on both front and rear. I also want to put in better pickups, but want it to look the same externally.
The first step was to get the room itself usable-picture it before, piled chest-high with stuff meant to be taken to Goodwill and 5,000 cardboard boxes. I keep trying to attach pictures but it keeps telling me they’re too big. I whittled my “guitar pile” down to these cases (everything posted above) from 23 total. I’ve sold off a lot. I may miss some of thrr we m eventually, but if I found them once, they’ll come back up for sale eventually. The second issue is the terrible job the PO of our house did on the plumbing-it leaks and we basically have to replace ALL of it (partly why I was working so much, so we can afford to gut and replace two complete bathrooms) It’s directly above my work area, so I can’t leave anything out that I don’t want to get wet.
Bully...! Go daan...! I need to reclaim some space... Been putting off the dump & Goodwill runs. Some days, my project goal, is getting a cup of coffee... But, I'm working on it.!!
Today’s progress: cutting the veneer I’m putting on the Hondo headstock. I also need to sand off the glue remains from the last time I tried veneering it. Since that attempt I bought 6 more clamps, and got thin boards (sliced up 1x6) to clamp both sides of the ‘stock because none of my clamps were big enough to fit over the stock and the chunk of 2x4 I tried using before... I also put a few more coats of Lacquer on this body. Soon I’ll be able to wet sand it flat and assemble it.
What I learned from mine, is the single coil pickups are “hot dog shaped”, meaning they don’t have the part sticking out the middle where the strings attach like a normal strat pickup. I found stupid cheap pickups on eBay, they were less than $10 for three of them so I got those. I’m not sure they were any better than what your guitar already has though- cheap Korean singles with the brass bottoms like in lots of those guitars just don’t sound good. You can find “Select by EMG” pickups which also came in lots of MIK stuff that have the same shape, but (arguably) sound better than the bargain basement ones I have...
