I'm planning giving painting over a sanded original finish a shot- smooth it out, clean it up, prime with BIN, paint and polish

I used BIN on the interior a house we had just purchased in not so great shape- it covered stains, glossy enamel, even one bedroom that had been repainted a nasty dark plum- it covered everything and was able to cover pretty much everything with one topcoat

I don't have video, but here are some pics of the last guitar I stripped. This one is going to be seafoam green.

The heat gun is easy. Just take your time at first so you get a feel for it. If you get it too hot, you will burn the wood. Once you get the hang of it, it a quick sand with 220 and your ready for primer.

I have three projects planned for this summer. I will do build threads for all of them.

The reason I take them back down to wood, is the factory poly finish is very thick. Some people say it affects the tone. I don't know if that's true or not, but it's not hard to get it to wood, so why not?

    Just my opinion.

Just a sanded original? No heat gun? Are you taking it down to the wood or just enough to smooth it out?

Here is a link to the slide show of the yellow guitar build. It's been on here before, but it shows step by step what I did. You will see when I stripped the paint, I burned the wood on the back it turned out just fine, but wouldn't be good if you're planning on a natural finish. By the time I got to the front of the guitar, I had it down pat.

Just smoothing- the body I was looking at seemed to have a thinner finish than most. There seems to be a wide variance in how thick the finish is on these inexpensive guitars

My son wants me to do a swirl paint job. I've watched some videos on it. Don't know if I'm up to that yet.

I thought chocolate brown would look sweet but I have to agree that vintage white would look fantastic as well...

Looking forward to warmer weather and the final product :D

Orange is still in the lead!

I guess it will look something like this.

    Not bad!

I'm kind of surprised nobody has picked khaki. I thought that would have looked pretty cool.

I vote for blue, but maybe with a metallic in it, or a candy (silver base coat with a blue trans top coat). I was even reading about these guys trying to duplicate the blue on R2D2, by putting down a purple base coat, and a transparent blue top coat over that, all with rattle cans. Interesting. But I admire you guys that can paint a guitar! I wanted to try it, but after spending all the summer sanding and sanding and touching up paint on my house, I just don't have the patience for it anymore. I just really hate sanding now. I know you have to sand all those coats and sand the clear coats to get it to look good on a guitar. Ugh, I don't think I have it in me.

I would love to try something crazy but I am just not artistic enough. No matter how hard I try to come up with something new, I know it's just going to end up looking like EVH's guitar Lol

The votes for blue have doubled since I voted. But Orange? I'm a Gator, but WTF, Orange?! Are the Gretsch owners voting? :)

If you're guard and plastics are 'Blackmore' like you've got to go the Vintage white route…

I'd be ok with that. That's a great looking guitar. But the antique white only has 3 votes.

    The people will decide! :)
