What is the official color name of my Squier Strat? I think it is the "Contemporary" model. It's a mid-80s model (I think it's an '85 but I'm not positive.)

Dakota Red. Fiesta Red looks a bit like tomato soup.

Is it me, or does it look like it's had a re-fin at somepoint?

I strongly doubt it. The guitar is a 1985 model or newer, and I bought it in 1992. It has a rather large ding near the strap pin near the bridge. I doubt somebody would have refinished a new guitar and then dropped it, causing the finish to break off. And the inside of the guitar is the exact same color as the outside. I'd be utterly shocked to find out that it had been refinished.

Call Fender Customer support @ (480) 596-7195. Have the serial number ready.

They *MIGHT* have the info. They have always been very helpfull when I call them.

The one closest to the volume knob is a coil tap and the other one is indeed a kill switch. Neither of them work very well.

And even then, they only keep detailed records on Fender branded guitars, not Squiers. As far as I've heard even on recent production they can't tell you just from a serial number what color or feature combination (like fretboard type on models which are available with either Maple or Rosewood) a Squier has like they can a Fender.

Not true. They have verified by serial numbers the colors of my Squier Bullet Specials. I have one that is a color that is not listed in their files but they confirmed it as being genuine by the serial number. They have also verified my 1995 Dot and my 7 String Stowhemaster etc. using the serial numbers.

I sent my serial to Fender and they had no information on it. They had information on my Mexican Strats but none on the Japanese Squier. I haven't sent them the serial to my Japanese Tele so I have no idea if they have records from Fender Japan from the '80s.

i know for a fact that they don't have anything on anything from the 80s because someone on strat talk was looking for some info on a guitar from the late 80s or early 90s and sent fender the serial number and the email he got back from fender stated that they couldn't help him because their record of serial numbers only goes back to 93.
