I'm trying to think of a reason why the switch's orientation might possibly matter, but I can't.

Well if you put it in backwards wouldnt the selection switch be reversed?

It doesn't, except that you'll need to run the wires around to the back, and if you follow all the wiring diagrams on the internet, the 1-5 will be 5-1 instead.

Only if you wire it backwards. The contacts are the same on both sides.

But if one way puts the switch's lugs closer to the pots and pickups, I guess I'd choose that one.
