I have a red Squier Stratocaster with a single humbucker pickup. Black headstock, black pickguard, regular tremolo, rosewood fretboard with a maple neck. Made in Japan. It is either an 85 or 86 model according to the serial number. I've seen one guitar just like it except it was black, in a pawn shop. I got it in 1992, and it had an Epiphone pickup, I replaced it with a Select pickup. I also added a coil tap switch and an on-off switch. The guitar is heavy and is very high quality. What is the story behind this guitar? What was the model name? How rare is it?

By the way, it's only routed for the single humbucker. There is no way to add a neck pickup without cutting up the guitar.

The single humbucker and toggle switches remind me of the Fender Lead I that I used to have. Nice modification. Pretty rare Squier, I'd say. :)

those are not really that rare,

I see them all the time, they are not as common as a squier affintiy or common bullet but there are plenty of them out there

black headstock, and one pickup, I can not tell what color that is, it looks more pink but alot of those models were either red or black.

they had a few different contemporary models, one with no pickguard, and a few different pickupconfigurations, alot with painted black headstocks

They aren't real common, but there are a fair number of them floating around. They were from the later part of the MIJ era (1985-1987 or so), and were a "contemporary" model. They came in various pickup configurations, with a pickguard like this one or with rear loading electronics, and some had vintage style trems like this one, others the System 1 and some had Floyd Rose trems. Some had reverse headstocks, some regular. Some headstocks were painted, some plain... They were kind of a predecessor to the "Stagemaster", "Showmaster" or "HM" series.

Stratphobic: You're from Fort Smith? I'm originally from Mena. I actually saw the black Stratocaster like mine at a pawn shop on US 271 in Fort Smith...I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head but it was on the west side of the road.

i can think of two on 271. one is a pretty nice one, one of those that advertises 'we buy gold!' and they had a decent selection of used guitars and amps and there's another one that's kinda ghetto and is like right across 271 from the whirlpool factory.

It was abut 18 years ago since I was at this pawn shop, it might not even be open now. I bought a white Arbor Explorer copy from them. I wish I had bought that black Strat but I didn't have the money.

I just looked it up on Google Maps because I was curious, and I think the name of it was Cooper's. They had a decent selection of guitars back in the day.

I have the same guitar. It even has the back plate missing. It only has a volume knob however. but everything else is identical, even the color red and the black headstock.
