Hey there. Wondering if Squier has ever made a “stock” single humbucker version of the Strat (an “H” versus HSS if you will)?

I’ve seen some Frankenstrat versions of modded Squiers and Fenders, but can’t recall a stock version for either brand.

Anybody have any experience or knowledge? And if so, what the model was called at either the Squier or Fender levels?

    Many thanks.

So they did actually make one. Looks like at the Bullet level only.Guess I’m going to have to build my own mod then.

Hello Kitty just gives me the creeps...

As @mdparent03 mentioned, theres the Tom Delonge model. It has a full-depth body and the quality of a Squier Standard Stratocaster. It has one grinding, dark, rock humbucker, one volume control, and a hardtail bridge. The body is routed for the single pickup. This model is a bit difficult to find, but they're out there.

If you’re looking for one with a trem you’ll have to mod your own. Most of the single humbucker Squier Strats were hardtails. It’s just a pickguard swap. I built this one with a late ‘90s Squier body and a Starcaster neck. The majority of Squier bodies are routed fo a bridge humbucker.

    Thanks for the updates.

I have a line on a charvel Strat style body with a Strat neck that’s routed for an HSS set-up, so I think I’ll move on that and then decide on pick ups and plastics. No tremolo.

Thanks for all the input on these. Reason I want one is that I foresee playing my first gig in the new year and because I’m a beginner, want a simplest setup so I don’t have to mess with pickup choices and tone controls...

That is a good reason. Many spend hours on the whammy bar and fixing tuning rather than playing notes. I hard tail my Strats for this same reason. Eric Clapton famously put a wood block in one or more of his Strats to convert them to a hard tail (look up blocking trem) and Fender even sells a kit, but just find a scrap of wood around the house that fits and you're good to go.

Phil X encouraged me with this video to seek out a LP Junior, I got an Epiphone Special Junior used for $15 and added a few parts, and it taught me a lot about playing.

Hmmm. If I were me I wouldn't paint myself into the single pickup corner just for that. You can play any strat that has a humbucker in the bridge position: take the whammy bar off, don't touch the pickup switch, and don't touch the tone control. With just a bit of self-disipline, that's a single pickup guitar.

    Nice job!

My first ever attempt at modding: I did sort-of a similarly inspired job on a used anonymous (possibly partscaster) Squier several years ago. New pick guard with some masking tape and rattle cans and a GFS VH-inspired HB. Voila! All new vibe and tone! :)

I have two :) Silver grey and of course...... black. Somebody here has all the colors though! :D good cheap clean fun!

I replaced the humbucker and split them on a switch on both. Added a tone circuit to one. The original pup on the 2002 actually sounded great. The later Samick built not so much.

Every once on awhile the go sort of cheap on SGW.

Don't forget the Squire Showmaster. They made three 24 fret Showmasters with a single humbucker in the bridge:

2003 Jimmie Shine SO-Cal Speed Shop

And there was a 2003 Jimmie Shand Irish guitar. I don't have a photo of it

The Bullet Special was made in 5 colors:

    All of mine are modded.

As AllroyPA says build one. Here are mine:

Guts. Nylon string Squier Bullet with Pizo bridge pickup.

1999 Stagemaster with Zexcoil single. Based on SRV Yellow guitar.

Charlie. Lollar Charlie Christian pickup, gold hardware, bone nut, flat-wound strings for jazz. Sweet!

Just let your mind run wild. Any Squire with a pick guard is easy to build into a single pickup model.
