When I bought my Squier Supersonic off of Reverb the seller had noted that "The neck pickup seems to be wired out of phase, it has that kind of quacky quality to it. I am not a guitar tech and I haven't looked into the issue further. It may be a quick phase reversal fix, but it seems most folks replace the pickups in these guitars with something nicer anyway. From what I can tell this guitar is 100% stock (except for the knobs, which someone replaced with two TONE knobs, whereas this guitar is wired for two volumes (one for each pickup) with unmarked knobs. Ships in a nice soft-shell case. "

When I got the guitar I plugged her in and flipped the switch to the neck and it was perfectly normal. Flicked it to the bridge and also perfectly normal. In the middle position is where we went out of phase and output dropped. I looked at the pickups and from the side I could see that the pickup tape was different looking on the bridge pickup than the neck. I kept playing it and dialing in the setup for the last few days without really looking into it much further.

Last night my wife had a soccer coaches meeting for our kids league that's about to begin so I had some time with her out of the house to pop open the PG and see what was going on underneath. Sure enough my old gal has been keeping a secret from me. Neck HB is stock but in the bridge lo and behold there is a Gibson Burst Bucker 1 pickup with a date code from 2009. Pretty sweet! I flipped the phase on the wiring and bingo it all works as it should. Now it's got me wondering what Burst Bucker would pair well in the neck!

Either way I'm just gonna play, play, play this beauty. The action is soooo smooth, striking looks and I have a hard time putting her down. It's gonna be a good weekend:D

    Very cool.

Did you leave it with 2 volumes (that's one each pickup)?

    How heavy is this?

Yes I left it with two volumes. The neck pickup is pretty dark and the bridge pickup is not bright enough that I long for a tone control on it. The guitar itself is pretty light actually. Haven’t weighed it but wouldn’t be surprised if it was in the low 7lbs area.

Nice! Back in 2003 I bought a Dean ML online and it showed up with vintage Gibson T Top pickups. Oh yeah.

Not that particular model, but I have other GM pickups. They have all been great.

    Congrats. That's a nice surprise.

+1 on the GM alnico II. I've never been disappointed with GM pups. :)

Found another secret! It’s not a typical Strat neck joint at all. It has a long neck tenon akin to a Gibson. Who’d a thunk?

I guess it makes sense with the weird pocket, but I just wish it had been more traditional.

Awesome! It should give you more sustain a la Gibson!

As for the 2nd pickup, perhaps you could try another second hand Gibson burstbucker pickup (about $100/130 second hand) or its cheaper "little bro", the Epiphone probucker (the probuckers are based on the burstbuckers). They sound very similar and you can find some for about $30/40 second hand.

Eh I kinda think it's cool!. You can't see the tenon under the PG so if it adds to any additional sustain or stability I'm all about it.

I was thinking of going the burstbucker road but completely didn't know about the probuckers either. Thanks for the heads up!
