man, its been a couple of years since i did a finish on a guitar body (SO much quicker to buy finished parts), I guess I forgot how much I flipping HATE sanding!!

I can do about 10-15 minutes, then I gotta stop and rest for a while -- with seemingly endless iterations, day after day.

I did an oxblood (sort of) dye to enhance the grain on this Ash body, and have been sanding and sanding and sanding ....

hoping I can finish sanding tonight and tomorrow, and get some dye down for the main color this weekend -- that is, if my arms don't fall off first!!

I am wondering why you stained it so dark to start with if you wanted it a lighter color

I was able to do the front face and back face w/ the orbital -- but the sides and the contours are really hard to get w/ the sander - gotta use foam sanding blocks to get in those curves

I want a dark grain - this method stains the whole thing dark, then you sand off most of it, leaving just the grain colored, and when you do the main color, the grain is enhanced.

You caught me at just the right time, @IronSchef. I agree completely! I'm refretting my '76 Strat's maple neck. I slid the frets out and spent a couple evenings carefully hand-sanding the polyester off the fretboard. That's some tough stuff!

You can take seme acetone, gloves, mask, go outdoors and wipe acetone on it. The outermost dye will disappear leaving the deeper grain dark.

That’s awesome! Your gonna end up with a nice piece. I don’t have the patience, maybe someday I’ll tackle a project like that. What happened to the MJT project?

I do a lot of sanding in my wood shop and I hate it myself.
