    Hello guys

Just a few weeks ago grabbed this Fender Japanese Telecaster (TL-354).

    20190602_212403.jpg 20190602_212340.jpg 20190602_212403.jpg 20190602_212414.jpg 20190602_212422.jpg
Couldn't resist the price which is I think was low enough (290£).

It has quite a lot of marks on the body needs proper cleaning and setup, but neck and frets are in very good condition.
    All stock:
    Alnico (cheapish) pickups.
Top loader bridge (will be changed soon).
    Gotoh tuners
    7.25" radius maple neck.
    Probably basswood body?
    Built in 1986-7

I did some research and find out that this model is similar to Squier Teles of that period because it's not a reissue, but hard to get more information so maybe you guys know something more interesting about it.

    Cheers

Fender Japan typically put out very good quality stuff - you should be very well pleased with this Tele. Very nice!

Some of these were actually made with poplar bodies, too. I had a Fender Japan '67 Telecaster Custom reissue for a while - noticed the same thing you did right away about the pickups and dropped in a pair of Texas Specials. Drilling for string through mounting won't be a big deal - just use some masking tape and a block of wood on the back to minimize finish and wood chipping... then a little more tape when you bore for the string ferrules. There's a couple of players I know who have top loading Teles and like the jangly sound they make. But if you want some thump when you lay into it you already know how you're going to get it ;-)

What doesn’t it do, that you want it to? If you ask 100 guys on here, you’ll get 99 different recommendations... Personally I’d put a mini humbucker in the neck spot, and a rail humbucker in the bridge (I like Dimarzio Tone Zone for Tele’s) but that’s just me...
If you just want classic Tele single coil sounds, you really can’t go wrong with a set of Artecs, I have them in several guitars. They do “what it says on the tin” and are reasonably priced.

Edit: Nice Guitar, man! MIJ stuff (especially tele’s) are always very well made, you’ll like that thing.

@Kenneth Mountain that neck is probably the same neck you got but with a Fender label. Both are TL-354 stamped ;)
