Thanks dbrian66 for that great Epiphone puzzle. All but the pickups is there, but I have some in the bin box for it.

It is getting sanded and refinished natural.

Got started on it. I tried to get the veneer off with a heat gun I know it's paper thin from my TV Yellow same which got a booboo, but it didn't even blister or anything. Maybe it's thicker than I thought. So, I went at it with the orbital sander and the thin poly came off surprisingly easily.

Flat surfaces were brought down to wood. As contour has a thicker sealer on, I left it there.

That’s going to look awesome. Going to do the same with the neck?

Just by clicking on this thread, you got infected.

To lessen the attack, you might try buying something like a ... Squier. But there are no garantees that the virus will leave your brain. You now have to learn to live with it. Some do, but it shows in their behaviour and I can always tell who's got it. I'm supposed to be a Dr after all, aren't I ?

That's some attractive grain on both sides! Can't wait to see it with fresh finish. Subscribed!

Special 1s with P90s are awesome guitars, and just about any mod one does to them just makes them closer to perfect guitars. Your refinish will certainly increase its Special-ness. The best upgrade I did on mine so-far was to put on some better tuners.

    Neck sanded.
I'm surprised how thin the finish is on this guitar.

Are going to leave the headstock like that? Might be pretty cool. What about the black face of the headstock?

 As the serial # was a tad dirty on the last numbers, I scratched the surface with my nail to clean it up ... and it came off !

Good thing I have this photo up here ! So, I'll probably sand the back too and rewrite the number freehand.

    Funny ...

    .

These Epi Specials are by far my favorite cheap used guitars to fix up and mod.

Original black. Frets leveled, truss cover flipped over, Bourns volume pot, push/pull tone pot to split the modded hot 16kohm humbucker, Switchcraft jack, mirror hat knobs. Pickup is lowered to the trim ring and screw poles are raised so in single coil it is a lot like a Tele bridge pickup tone.

How about using a steel number/letter stamping set then filling the impressions with colored paint afterwards?
