    The one that got away....

Great photographers have several qualities which make them, well, great. One is preparedness. Recently I was not prepared for what I believe could have been an epic, or at least wildly ironic, photo.

The situation: A large hospital waiting room full of families with loved ones in surgery. A Mennonite family of around 10 folks occupied a sizable portion. I exit the coffee pot area looking directly at the family across the room. I needed a camera locked and loaded, not a cup of joe, in order to capture what ultimately cracked me up---A teenage Mennonite girl looking at a 'Hot Rod' magazine.

Forgive me if only I see the comedy factor here.

Ultimately I respect folks' privacy. The picture I missed is seated firmly in my gray matter for now. I tip my cap to you guys / gals who put yourself in the position to capture cool photos.

    Yeah, that's a thing.
Vivian Maier was unknown during her lifetime, but they've recently discovered thousands of negatives that she had left behind. The majority of the notable ones are street photos of strangers.
One of her tricks was to use a twin-lens reflex camera with a viewfinder on the top. She'd shoot from chest or waist level, which was much less intrusive than holding a camera up to your eye. It also tended to isolate and elevate the subject because the backgrounds were above the horizon.

One of my favourites of hers:

With an SLR, the busy sidewalk would have been in line with his head, and he would also look shorter.

I expect every imager has such a story to tell. Or many!

Here's one of mine. It was 1968. The start of the teen sex revolution. Sex had just come out of the hidden spaces, and the results including the tragic.

I was working then in a major Boston hospital for children. And one day I got onto the elevator, camera as always in hand, and there in front of me was a maybe 16-year-old girl well along in her pregnancy. She was very pretty with a somewhat wistful expression and she with obvious deep involvement was reading a magazine whose cover boldly displayed "Teenage Romances."

    Sigh.

    Double sigh.

No, I would not intrude to grab the pic. But that image remains with me some 50+ years later.

Every time Barrie posts pics it reminds me that I need to make it out to the island again soon. I haven't been there since before I was a teenager.

Sometimes when I awaken I just walk around the house camera in hand and wait for something to grab my eyes.

A wee bit of sun, a wee bit of shadow. :)

Were mostly sharing recent pix here. But I'm working on a long-ago promised photo/video project for my family and thus finding and rejuvenating (to the extent possible) some old and precious photos.

Some can be pretty much fully recovered. Others, alas, not -- the fading has gone to far.

Here are a couple I've been working with this morning. Each from the seventies. Each of my wife Jan and my then quite young son, Aaron.

Faded or no, these are such precious memories - here brought back to life. -One of photography's great gifts to each of us.
