It isn't Spring, but yesterday the animals collectively decided it isn't Winter, any more. I saw the first woodchuck and chipmunk of the season and the Canada Geese began their noisy turf battles over who was going to occupy our property for nesting.

The geese will engage in noise, fury, and chasing for next 4 to 6 weeks until one committed couple convinces the rest to stay out. They will continue to defend the territory until the goslings hatch. After that moment, the parents don't give a damn any more and all the other geese will stop by to wish them good luck with the children. Several families of geese will mingle to feed and somehow get sorted out into their respective families when they leave.

Edit: Hoo boy! A big hawk just made a long, slow pass a few feet above the creek and all the geese freaked out. It must have been because they were surprised. Usually they pay no attention to hawks, as they can't pick up something a big as a goose. The hawk was probably seeing if there was a vulnerable duck that could be grabbed.

Every summer we have a pair of honkers that make our pond their home..They raise 6 0r 7 young ones here each year ..We seldom see any others..They don't stick around..
My niebors say they have seen them, but I haven't..

Beautiful in NYC today. I parked about half a mile away from school. Was a nice walk this morning. I think winter is finally over for us.

For those in the mid-west, stay safe with the Cyclone Bomb.

When Spring comes around so does the fishing. I have been looking for a small fishing boat to throw on top of my pickup when I pull the camper. I may just try one of these.
