On the thread about preferred strap length several of us old timers mentioned that we'd made that choice some time ago and never changed. I bet that is equally so for guys who started playing in later years, and that the way they, too, look when they play -- how they hold their guitar, their 'stance -- would reflect that even now.

And that, of course, made me start wondering about early pix and how they for each of us compare to today.

I, sadly, have no photos of my very first years playing. Either by myself or in my very first bands.

Here, though, is one from 1963, and another from 1964. Both bands were called "The Abstracts," but they were quite different groups.

This shot, back from `63, was the all instrumental band. It was taken when we were playing on the radio for the very first time. Doing "Sleepwalk."

This one is just a year or so later, playing the same guitar == a Gibson ES-125 TDC-- with the better known "Abstracts" during that group's early formative period in`64

I can't remember where I last set this guitar down. I can't find it anywhere.

The earliest was my Guild (taken in my yard)..
The one with my 59 Jazzmaster was later, taken on a gig..
The band name was The Manhattans ..Instrumental music mostly..
1959 or early 1960..(actually the pic of the Guild would be 1957)..

    Love those pix Papa Joe!

You have seen such changes in music and the music scene! Maybe you just take that for granted -- it was, after all, happening all around you with you in its midst -- but few today will get to see such things. (Today, from what I see, fewer and fewer know anything but today -- there is almost no cultural connection to even the recent past.)

Maybe that is why I, and so, so many of us here, value you so much, and so treasure your participation in this forum. :)

Yes Sir..That's the message I've been preaching (mostly to deaf ears), It's like building a house..Ya gotta lay the foundation and build 1 level at a time..
If the foundation fails, the walls will fall.
I still hear music from the 1800s..(and before)
That background has been very useful to me..

F0FC192B-4EEE-433C-8A7D-A0DDA7462A1D.jpeg So photobucket is being stupid and I can’t get all my pics. So here’s the oldest (digital) one I can get to now. It’s 1990/91, I’m 20 (or maybe 21), playing my new-to-me Squier P that I traded an HM Strat for.
I still have the flannel and the T-shirt, my buddy’s basement still looks like this (but his kid lives down there, and my buddy lives upstairs:) ) The bass is long gone, but the amp I’m trying out while this was taken is still in MY basement.

Was a big fan of the guitar solos in all the popular Michael Jackson videos... supposedly concentrating on the video in this picture:

I know I've posted these before (someday I've GOT to digitize my wife's huge collection of pictures from my playing days!) Both circa '78-'79.

Really cool seeing this pics folks, thanks for sharing.

My TBI fuzzed brain remembers a picture with a toy (prob plastic?) guitar, felt cowboy hat, holster with 6 shooter from the mid 60s. I'll keep searchin'.
