Someone nearby has three amps listed, two of which I might be interested in.

One is a Peavey Classic 30 1x12, the other is a Peavey Duel 212. Both are listed for $300, but I remember seeing the amps first listed about a month or more ago. According to listing, the Duel has new tubes and the Classic has new caps and tubes.

I don't have a lot of experience trying out different amps, and am hoping for advice on a few fronts. I play mostly clean or with slight gain, current amp is a Katana 50 that I like a lot but am looking to chase more tones and also have a second amp for jamming.

    - Wondering, given the same price for each, which you think is the better amp? I've heard more about the classic but the Duel 212 also looks like a monster.
    - If I offer between $200-$250 for one (or perhaps $400 for both) do you think that is a reasonable deal on my end?

As always I appreciate any thoughts you guys have. Cheers.

Do you mean the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe? Sorry - just don't know the short names for these.

Classic 30 1-12" for sure - great amp (and the Duel is super heavy!)

I would want to ask about the cap replacement. I'm always a bit wary of those "Just recently serviced, tuned up, new tubes and all ready to go" type ads. Maybe you do that prior to selling an amp, fair enough. Then again maybe you put money into it and it didn't meet expectations so now it's for sale...

Good call - seller is around 5 or 10 minutes away so I was thinking I'd bring a guitar and cord. Would plugging it in and reasonably cranking it with different settings be enough to discover any issues, or am I missing the boat?

Contacted the seller and they are happy at $230. I think seller is the ex or significant other of the person who owned it - so technical info on work done will be scarce.

    $230 For a Classic30 is a good deal! I'd jump on that.

Thanks guys! Seller said they have 9 amps / guitars for sale, not all are listed on local sites. Thinking I might bring extra cash but that could be dangerous. I just cleaned my basement which means more guitar space :)

Hey I'd get the classic 30 for sure and if you don't like it hit me up and we'll make a deal on it.

Got back a little while ago. I met the seller - the guitarist is the son of the person I made the initial deal with online, and dealt with him when I got there. I found from the son that the Classic 30 had already sold.

There were a bunch of amps there, some of them I hadn't seen listed by the seller. There were two Classic 50's, one a 212 and the other a 410. He said that he was looking for $350 for the 212 and $400 for the 410.

I tried out the 212 first, it was nice while clean and OK while dirty but did not blow me away. The 410 was a completely different story - it was out of this world; as soon as I started on it I knew I was going to leave with it. I made a deal at $360 for the 410. Maybe not as good of a deal as $230 for the Classic 30, but I'm OK with that - it is a fantastic amp. Cheers everyone.

I have an early 212 Classic. Since it's all solid state in the preamp, any distortion you get from turning down the master volume and turning up the gain is really obviously fuzzy transistor distortion. If you keep the master all the way up and play it loud enough to distort the two 6L6s, it sounds excellent. So you're stuck either using an attenuator, or a distortion pedal you like.

I recently built a Real McTube 12AX7 distortion pedal and can now use that with the 212 for non-ear-shattering blues sounds.

I'd love to hear more about the 410. I think that might be similar to the 212, but with the different speakers, but I'll check out a schematic.

I found a 410 schematic, and it applies to the 212, but these are earlier than the one I have, because they have tubes in the preamp. Is yours that way, with some 12AX7s, or are there just two 6L6s and no other tubes?

@Triple Jim Here are some pics of the back. Not a tube amp expert, but hope to learn. Looks to be seven tubes. The four on the left appear to say EL84 and 6B05. Can't make out what is said on the three on the right other than one says 12Ax7. Is that good?? :)
