So I got an Ibanez awhile ago on trade and I’ve always liked Ibanez necks. I thought back to the local Tele guy who’s on here I met a few years back (@Wizzer) and reached out to see if still was messing with Teles. He happened to have a body and I had a project on the way. I had a hardtail string through bridge from a old scrapped build and wanted a bucket of some sort. It started as lust for a P90, but I adjusted my sights after putting the neck and body together. I picked up a Gibby BurstBucker and a few 500k micro pots and was pretty proud of myself.... until I realized I needed to drill the body for the bridge and then I had bought a neck humbucker.... “Eff my life” I thought then I remembered “I’m a DIY’r and a memeber of Squier-Talk!!! If I can’t do it, one of the gents on the board will know how!!”

Here’s the first few steps of progress. I did add some high quality Sharpie graphics that will really confuse the masses!!

Step two.... at some point I had to drill the body and all I have is my hand drill. I could have driven across town (50 plus miles in crappy traffic) or improvise!!

So for this step... I measured out the bridge spot, marked off the area with tape, made pen marks, used ruler, measured twice and a half, marked once, set up my bridge (and yes I took the bridge adjustment length into consideration) and then i used a punch to make the indents for my drill. After thinking how hard this is gonna be to do by hand, I noticed a guitar strap button in my parts bin.... GAME ON!!!

After running it through the high and low E locations, I drilled about 3/4 of the way through the other 4 and popped a few pilots into the screw holes for the bridge. Next I flipped the body over, used the bridge to locate the other 4 string holes and went to town. 86FE4642-654A-42D4-8B75-3559E945EFDC.jpeg D1949EF6-E934-4143-96D6-20A3C17C6632.jpeg 1420A9AD-CE98-4170-965C-4B334CFF5EDD.jpeg 98E7C720-8AE4-4AB8-B2DA-D21060371A3D.jpeg

There was a little pop on the back from the drill bit, but I’m sure the ferrule should hide it. If not, whatever. #builtnotbought :p

Well it’s not pretty, but it’ll get the job done.

Really wish I’d have spaced those further out... but this is a temporary set up anyway. I should have the switch plate and the pickguard next week.

It's looking good, I always loved an Ibanez neck and hated a Tele headstock so it's a big improvement to me!

I was building this with purpose, Esquire style. I wanted a simple playing platform. As far as the PG and switch plate, I have them on the way due to receive next week with my Archtop bridge. I just wanted to get it playable to see if I like the humbucker, if not I’ll order one with the other parts.

Cool build, you never know what you might stumble on to when building out of the box.
