Default How Many Guitars is Too Many Guitars

I know this is probably the wrong place to ask this questio, but here goes anyway. For most of my life I have been a one guitar guy, and I've usually strayed, for budget reasons, to gutars built out of the US (exeption of 2 Peavey's) This past June I picked up a little Squier Std Strat for my birthday and was really surprized at the playability of this axe, so I let my wife know I had a new hobby, flipping guitars. So over the last month or so I have bought and sold 8 or so asorted Squiers and one Fender, I also sold my old #1 (Parker P-38) just because I was havein so much fun with the multitudes of guitars I was handling, not to mention 3 or 4 amps.

So, now I definitely see the advantage in an arsenal, but how many is too many? I can see the need for at least 2 maybe 3 Tele's, a couple of Strats, a hollowbody, and maybe something along the lines of a thin solid body humbucker (LP special).

What would be your list of must haves, a reasonably attainable list for the tight of budget?

Yeah, but she can only wear 1 pair of shoes at a time... and I bet she's got more than 4 pairs. Tell her guitars are like shoes in that you've got to have the right kind of guitar to go with what you're playing like you've got to have the right pair of shoes to go with what you're wearing...

For years I had one, and that was plenty. Then I bought another one and that was plenty as well. Then I found the internet...or it found me...and now I have around 15 guitars, and would still like to add a select few to the quiver. In fact I'm probably going to buy another Squier bullet tonight. I guess it's all relative.

hopefully it will subside. Strat Talk "inspired" me to go on a guitar-buying spree...and before i knew it, i'd bought 8 in about 9 months. i really have to sell a few, cause they're just collecting dust at this point.

I currently have two strats, a tele, an acoustic, and a homemade one. I never play the homemade one, I just keep it for sentimental reasons. However, as my collection has evolved over the years, they guitars have gotten better, and I find that I like playing them more. So, my MIK Squier HSS doesn't get played that much. I like my Vintage Modified and BSB Tele too much. So as much as I like modding and tinkering, I know I'm not going to be playing them. I might actually sell the HSS, even though it's a decent sounding and playing guitar.

Unpossible sir!

Currently I have 1 bass (Ibanes Rickenfaker 4001 Copy), 2 acoustics and 7 electrics. Always room for one more.

Maybe I'd have an acoustic guitar, a Stratocaster and a bass. And a little 1 watt amplifier.

How many is too many? That depends. Guitars have become a serious pasttime for me. In addition to my personal collection, I've taken to picking up unloved guitars, refurbishing them and selling them. I have a small shop area where I've turned over about 60 or 70 guitars so far. The advantage of this little business is that the profits go to buying guitars for my collection, so the hobby pays for itself. Here's the room where I have most of my permanent collection. It's a small room so they are not all on display, but you get the idea.

New screen name? Well, at the moment, only 2 of those guitars are Martins (the dread in the center is an MMV and the triple O to the right of it is a 000-28 Eric Clapton), so it's still accurate.

The SG on the left is an SG Special (the full gloss type, not the faded) and the one on the right is an SG Standard. Got the Special on Ebay for just under $600...and the Standard on Craigslist for $700. Both are in brand new condition.
This is how you need to use your wall space in that apartment of yours, pesky. Just think how many strats you could have!

I think my first NYC apartment on West 47th between 8th and 9th (1978) was held together by roach poop.
Man, has that neighborhood changed since then.

how many guitars is too many ? there's too many nice guitars being made today to limit yourself. so, why fight it ? there's still a couple more that I'd like to get.

I currently have 1 Bass, and 6 electrics. My Wife has said "no more" after the third.... but I keep finding real deals, or projects and convince her to let me get another....

I have had to sell a few to get the new one, but that is not always the case.

So why do I have 6 electrics?

They all sound and play differently: All are modded except the Stratocaster and the Kay:

1 Esquire-ized Tele, 1 Stratocaster, 1 Squier 51, 1 First Act semi hollowbody, 1 Kay Speed Demon hollowbody, and a project 51 in the basement.

I NEED them all to be able to play different styles. The Hollowbodies are not so great for surf music, and the Strat is not so great for the style of knockaround Punk I often play. The Esquire is intentionally super ice pick trebly, so is limited to the Punk stuff. The Kay is great for Blues, and the First Act is a great guitar for strumming while singing.

They are like a set of screwdrivers: each is a seperate tool.

Phred

About 20 years ago my best friend went wild buying guitars and he had problems keeping strings on them. Also, guitars we like on this board are cheap in comparison to being into Rickenbacker or Martin. Martin is an expensive habit. I hear that Vince Gill has bad GAS for vintage Martin's and knows quite a lot about them. George Gruhn says that Gill has no problem throwing down 40k for a guitar if he likes it. Also, I saw an interview with John Mayer and he said that he has collected around 200 guitars. I bet none of Mayer's guitars are cheap. We are lucky to all like the Squier. Even a really good one isn't going to set you back too far. I say the more the merrier.

Cheers to all of us.
