Joe is mentioned in the book, "You Can't Stop A Comet". here's his website :www.joerichardsonexpress.com

sorry, don't mean to sidetrack the thread.

My girlfriend (now wife) and I went to see Lonnie Mack and SRV at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta 12/31/86-1/1/87. What a show and what a way to ring in the New Year!

Great interview...thanks, Grumps.

I never had the chance to see Stevie live...that's something I'll always regret.

My wife and I do a charity bike ride every year that's the last Sunday in August...always around the date Stevie passed on. The route goes right by Alpine Valley, too...I always say a little prayer for Stevie and thank him for all his great music when we ride past.

No argument on that. I had hopes for Kenny Wayne Shepherd, but he seems to have changed direction.

I had tickets to that fateful show. I still have my unused ticket around here somewhere. But my buddy and his GF went, I had to work....regardless, they actually heard the crash, everyone did, but noone knew what had happened and continued walking out to the parking lot. Very sad, and a night that I'll regret for the rest of my life.

Thanks for the link.. hadn't seen that~

Back in the mid 80's I was listening to crap.. Didn't have a clue about good musicianship, or guitar players who played with passion.. I was listening to Ratt and Quiet Riot and thinking it was awesome ( God help me )

Then on a whim, I went with some friends to see Stevie Ray at an outdoor venue in Massachusetts..I think it was 1984. That day completely changed my entire view of music forever.. I had never experienced anything like it.

I ended up seeing him 10 times over the next 6 years and every time was just amazing.. Last show I saw was with Jeff Beck, and as much as I appreciated seeing Beck, it was SRV that I was really there to see.. I've seen some really great guitar players since then, but I've seen nobody who can just close thier eyes and let the music flow out so effortlessly. He was gifted.

I still listen to him at least weekly.. and I love finding stuff on YT I haven't seen before.. brings him back for at least a few minutes

Here's a great clip from a show that hasn't been released..

RIP SRV

I often wonder what would have happened if he'd never switched seats for that trip. Apart from the obvious, I'm a firm believer in the old saying "a flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long..."

Likewise, I didn't pick up on SRV until the '90s, I remember listening to "Remembering Stevie" on Buddy Guys' "Damn right I've got the blues" CD and wondering who Stevie was..... I bought "The Sky is Crying" compilation in Dallas after I heard it being played in a CD store.
I remember listening to "Little Wing" on repeat for a 2 hour car trip once, it led to me buying a strat, sunburst with rosewood surprisingly!

A colleague at work tells a tale of seeing him at Hammersmith Odeon, he walked out on stage playing behind his head, and then carried on having a conversation with someone in the front row. Must be a special memory.

My story is similar to Turbo Kev's. Except I was a teen, and one of the radio stations had an album preview show and they played all of Texas Flood. My whole musical life changed at that moment. from the first note. Next day I went to the local record store (remember those?) and had him order it. It wasn't out yet. I had the first copy in town. Still have it.

Saw SRV open for Huey Lewis on SRV's "Couldn't stand the weather" tour. He did an album signing that morning at a record store. I had him sign my guitar strap. I still have the strap although the autograph is faded to almost gone.

There will never be another, but I can still listen to him over and over til everyone but me is sick of it.

Don't feel alone - that's pretty much all there was on the radio in the 80s (kinda like now).

Great video Turbokev! Whenever I see the man, I think "I really should be practicing right now!"

However, watching his prowess over the guitar, I have to wonder just how many hours of playing did Stevie have too get to that level?! Not that it would matter for me, I'd need 3x's what he had. I also believe there was alot of natural talent there as well.

that would have freaked me out hearing that...I remember hearing of the accident and his passing while driving in Tampa and pulling over in stunned disbelief....I still miss him today... R.I.P. Stevie.
