Default Understring radius gauge

Hello. Thinking of buying an understring radius gauge to easily set the string heights on my Strat. So my questions,

1. What is the general consensus on understring radius gauges? Useful or money down the drain?

2. Do you believe that buying a set of 8 with the most popular gauges is advisable? In my case a single 9.5" that I need would go for 7 USD and the full set of 8 pieces would be around 18.5 USD postage included.

I just can't imagine why I would need the remaining gauges at this point but I am a newbie so perhaps I am missing something. Do many guitars use these gauges? An LP model for example (which is definitely my next guitar) does not to the best of my knowledge.

Many thanks in advance for all the help!

I would bet you're gonna get answers from both sides but I like and use radius gauges although I don't think I would spend much money on them.
I use the ones that came free with this book, http://www.amazon.com/The-Guitar-Pla.../dp/0879309210.
It's a pretty good book too and will give you a good intro to repairs and set-ups.

Funny.....I bought a radius set from StewMac a few years back and I guess I don't have enough 'OCD' to use them as I keep eye-balling the setup/adjustments and going by feel (bending strings without fretting out).

Old/bad habits keep taking precedence......hmmm, that might account for some of the other questionable things I do.

I'm not sure how you would use an understring radius gauge to measure string height. I use an automotive feeler gauge set. Just because the arc of your saddles matches your fretboard doesn't mean the heights are correct. Yes, the gauge will tell you the saddle arc is good but if you need a truss rod adjustment, fret leveling or nut filing, the saddle arc won't matter.

Well, you can buy them, but you can just as easily make them up using cereal box cardboard and a school drawing set or, if you wait a few weeks, I'll be posting the ones I made up out of copper water line - less than $5 for the whole set.
