another typical set up question
ok, so i've got the relief in the neck, and the bridge saddles jacked has high as they'll go. now the action is high, but if i drop the saddles any lower, i get fret buzz from fret 9 on up. i put a shim in the neck and that helped a bit but still not as much as i wanted. what can i do next before i break down and take it to a tech?

how much relief is there in the neck? is it safe to assume you shimmed the neck at the headstock end?

If the frets are properly leveled and the neck is properly adjusted You shouldn't get fret buzz..That's where you should start..

as well as above posts, get a small straight edge that will span three frets ( I use my stew mac set up gauge), work up and down the neck, if it rocks at all you have a high fret and will def cause buzz.

making progress. i tightened the truss rod...quite a bit actually. about 3/4 of turn! the neck still looks like it's gotta slight curve to it, but i'll give it a couple of days to settle. in the meantime, i was able to lower the saddles a hair. when i stuck my gauge up to the strings and the 17th fret, action was reading at 4/64"...fender specs. the actions feeling better now so that's all that matters. we'll see in a couple of days how the neck straightens out.
