derp!!
so i plug in my wife's guitar (p90s) for the 1st time in 2 months and get onslaughted with this vile hum. so my 1st thought was "bad ground". i tear it apart, rewire it, aaaand...vile hum. so...lather rinse repeat i do it again! rewire aaaand hummmmm (see how annoying this is getting??). after an hour and a half of grumbling, i plug my unfinished partscaster that has d. allen pups in it...and i get the hum. now i KNOW his wiring is good...so whats the prob? i turn the lights out and the hum gets real quiet. still there but thats a single coil for ya. ok, light out...lil hum. light on? VILE HUM! it's not the guitar. it's not the wiring. it's my house!
just thought i'd share that. live n' learn.

Do you have the same hum problem with humbucking pickups? Just wondering how quiet those humbuckers really are in known hum environments.

checked the cord. all the cords had the same hum.
and the humbuckers are dead quiet...although i've noticed that they're sounding pretty muddy...u think that the hum could be stealing my tone out of those? that sounds pretty odd, but i guess electricity is gonna affect a number of things in an electric guitar.
like i said, it's definitely the house. i just played the guitar since it's sunny out and no lights were on. this time i just had the typical single coil hum. the house is roughly 50, 60 years old so i know the electric wiring is older. when we moved in, i had to have electricians give it a once over to make sure everything was safe. didn't account for guitar hum though.

Have you replaced the regular light bulbs in the house with the compact fluorescent ones? They'll make some noise.

You probably have some grounding issues in the house, do you know the electricians you hired. A loose ground or neutral can cause all kinds of issues.

agree, try a different outlet.....see if it changes. Also a $3.00 tester at lowes will let you know,. ones that plug in and with lights that will light if you have an open ground or a miss wired common.

in the room they're in it's track lighting that's the issue, but they are incandescent. i don't know the electricians cuz they were my landlord's. at this point, i may try a different outlet or resort to getting a noise suppressor.
