Question for ALL the RATTLE CAN guys!!!
Ok guys, quick question here.
I have been warned by several people to NOT USE power tools to buff a paint job to a shine.
Is this the general consensus around Squier Talk as well??
Also, the more I read into the KRYLON users, I wonder...are they clearcoating,
or just sanding and buffing the gloss paints??

From my experience which isn't much, if i don't clear coat, the paint is easily scratched have never been able to get a good shine without it. I don't understand why you couldn't use power tools. Wouldn't a rotary buffer at a high speed bring out a better shine? Now i'm curious as to why you couldn't.

I used Krylon paint and clear on my S-clone. Turned out well. Did a bit of fine wetsanding - 1200 grit after the paint cured for several days. Painter here at work hooked me up with a foam pad and low speed buffer and some 3M or Meguiars polish. Worked like a charm. Paint still shrank for a couple months afterwards though. Krylon does take it's time to cure. If you have a friend at a body shop with a baking booth, that might be better for curing.
High speed buffing might burn thru the paint too quick, especially on edges. OR it might heat the paint up and start balling up. Neither is good. With buffers, you have to be careful about heat buildup and soft paint.
The foam pad looks like the acoustic foam you find in cases and studios. Except round on a buffer.
good luck
Randy

I just finished this project using Duplicolor aerosol cans for both the Olympic White and the clear gloss top coats. I buffed the clear gloss to a shine using 1000, 1200, 1500 and 2000 grit wet sanding papers, then 3M Rubbing Compound and 3M Polishing Compound on a wool pad fixed to a rotory wheel chucked into my power hand drill. Kept the speed fairly slow. Worked great. The finish is shinier than it appears in the photo.

On my guitars i hand buff. If ya do use a power buffer go easy around the edges so you won't burn through.
