Default GFS Tele

Hi All,
I am considering building a guitar. GFS has some descent parts. I dont really want a kit, but parts to build my own.

Has anyone purchased a body, neck and all the rest from GFS? If so - good, bad, indifferent? I know I could buy some others for a lot less. Even a used Squier then rebuild/mod.

Am in the right place to ask?

Thanks, Just wondering

Did you use their neck? How does it play? Updgrade pickups?

Looks like you stained it. Where did you get the stain? What type if fininsh?

Sorry for so many questions but I am really interested in doing this.

The maple neck is like the necks GFS sells, I already had it but I did have to cut the head stock. I used the GFS hardware that came with the kit. The electronics are CTS, pickups are Fender Classic 50's and Allparts 5 hole black guard.
I used an amber shellac to stain the body and neck, then used a clear spray to seal. French polish the body.

Very Nice! The part that worries me is the neck. I can cut and finish cabinetry and crafts, but the neck...

New thing, My local GC has a nice butterscotch tele for 129.00 - should I buy it and strip the finish, stain transparent red like I want or go with the GFS kit?

Thanks

Why not just get a GFS unfinish body buy the butterscotch and sell that body. I like the transparent red your going for, my other built

I think if I buy the body, I'll buy the neck too and leave the butterscotch at GC.

I really want a Red Tele with a white pearl guard and some hot pups!

I just picked up a body on clearance from GFS. Ordered a vintage orange strat body, received an olympic white. Emailed them and within 3 days I had received the correct body plus a return shipper for the white one. Excellent customer service, the body is likely lighter than I prefer but it was advertised as such.

One bit of advice though, don't order a vintage orange anything unless you are planning a taxi-caster. Or a bulldozer caster. The damned thing is taxicab yellow. I have no idea what I am going to do with it but I'll think of something. I was contemplating tire treads across the front at an angle and straight up the back.

Could you toss a good pick of it up sometime? I was thinking about grabbing one of these sometime for an "Aslancaster" build...

Here ya go - although I would not call it quality. I take pictures about like I play guitar... The second is the original photo taken under incandescent light and is much more orange than my eye sees. It is about what I saw in the catalog when I ordered and what I was hoping to get. I tried to color correct in the second to match what I see but it's still bit to orange, or has too much red. The thing looks industrial earthmoving yellow at first glance but at times shows hints of orange.

The last pic is my 2 orange guitars, the first is an 86 Carotene Orange RG560, the second is a Krylon orange rattlecan job, and the body is next to them for comparison. They are all showing up darker in pics than in reality.

Caterpillar theme?

On a side note that Ibanez looks awesome. Just like one I had in 94.

Just to clarify the body pictured is advertised as vintage orange.

I bought the RG without having ever played one because it was orange. I'm glad I did because it is one of my favorites. It is far from pristine but the neck is amazing as is the sound.

Its cool - just looks more like a capri orange in their pics, and I'd have been a little put out if I got it and it was not what I was looking for.

I actually like it, just not for my "someday" project...

I have an 88 570 in laser red that I have kicked around on selling being that it doesn't get used. It has that natural roadworn look to it. None of this artificial relic stuff on that one.

That orange is sweet though.
