Other than the CV50's and CVC's,
What's the next best thing?
I'm looking for a back up guitar.. or probably a project guitar, testing new pickups on, before i put it on my no. 1..
I haven't tested one, and I've read reviews that the affinity has thin necks.. I don't like thin necks.. I like more or a MIM standard neck.. how about the standards? how's the neck, overall build quality and playability?

The Standards have varied a little over the years, but are generally excellent.
The necks are generally great - tho some of the early 2000's models had narrow nuts.
The pups are alnico. The MiM Fenders have ceramics now!
Nice guitars - got my antique burst standard Strat for beans too!

I love my standard, neck is chunky but not to bad, I actually like it better (satin finish) than the CV's I've played (Poly Finish) and it has Alnico pups also. Over all it is a great guitar.

Thanks guys.. actually I'm leaningto the standards too.. though, I don't like the rosewood fretboard that much.. I'm more of a maple guy.. are the standards' neck interchangeable with real fenders? and warmoths, usacg and others?

Bought just last week one in my header , and price is in level with standards. I am surprised how fat and clear bright those Duncan Designed P90s tone is. No issues on anything, other than it is joy to play!
Edit: pg looks scracthy, factory plastic shield film is still on.
Neck is a lot chunkier than in my CV 50s Tele, but very comfortable to play. Finish is not so glossy than in CVs, maybe satin is right word here, and it`s not tinted. Custom II weighs less than CV 50s Tele. It is full sized in both nut width and body thickness.
Oh, it`s available in 2 finishes, mine and Butterscotch Blonde & Black PG.

Hi bro,
thanks, I tried this tele.. I think I tried the dog out of the bunch.. The neck pocket has like two-credit card thickness gap on either side.. the finish felt crappy and the pickups sound dull and lifeless.. take note that this is new-in store and I'm playing through a peavey bandit..
I like the neck thickness but the finish is not doing it for me.. I will try another one in another store and I hope I get to try one of the more better built ones..

I know what you mean. I have read from some people`s posts similar experiences concerning this guitar, and very positive too from others.
I still took a jump, and i am not disappointed! My example is maybe a lucky shot, but neck fits tightly in the pocket, frets are even, no buzz despite my usual low action, tuners keep their tuning despite 2 hours of heavy rock playing quite well. The tone is massive for a Tele, and certainly no dull!
You see what amp i`m mainly using, i sometimes wonder if some guitars do not go well together with certain amps.
I have noticed my VOX VT30 is most suited to single coils, specially with clean tone. My humbucker guitars sound best with a lot of gain.
In short: in my case, Custom II is in same class with CV 50.

Thanks man for the advices.. yes your example seems to be one of those better built ones.. the one I've tried have a bad fret job and hard-to-turn tuners..
I will try to look for a good one and try it through a vox.. I'm keeping my mind open since this is a back up body and the only thing I want from it is to have a good neck.. I don't like thinner necks..
one question though, can I put single coiled pups in these custom II's?

tried the Standard today.. and it's exactly what I'm looking for.. the one I tested is a good one.. no gap in the neck, feels solid.. I don't know if it's just me, but the knobs feel like it's a cheap guitar.. like the knobs on the MIM standard teles..

All of the Squiers I've seen use cheap pots and switches. Maybe the MIJ's don't, but the standards I have do.

nearly all squier have cheap pots and pickups
that is part what makes them affordable, the lesser hardware, that, and being build overseas with cheaper labor costs.
so yes, almost all squiers have cheap pots and pickups,
in the squier line, the parts do vary, however
the very first squiers (MIJ w/ JV serials) had American pickups and pots installed from the factory) Not all JVs did though, some JVs had Japanese made electronics.
from then on and after, squier has used cheaper hardware, and electronic.
through-out the years squier is known to barrow some parts from fender, so some hardware on some models is actually fender branded.
I think the models like the pro tone got better alnico tex-mex pickups, the classic vibes get squier designed alnico pickups, modeled after the pickups that went into the early JVS,
yes, like I said there are some variation in all lines, not as much in todays current production, more so in the older days when squier and fender were building guitars in the same factories

cool.. thanks! It wasn't a big deal really.. I could replace it with better or just leave it stock.. It's a back up guitar anyway.. I wish it comes in butterscotch blonde and maple fretboard though..
the pickups on the standard sound ordinary too.. but with a little reverb and some od, I guess it's fine.. but I'm not fussing about it.. I just want a guitar with a good neck that is similar to my no. 1 without breaking the bank..
I have yet to try the affinity series.. maybe people who have said that the necks are thin may not be even thin for me.. it would be pretty much the affinity vs standard.. since the thinline is way over my budget..

My son has the BSB Affinity and loves it. Gigs with it, plays pretty hard at times. It works well and he likes how it feels and looks. He really likes the maple fb. The affinity would be a good testbed guitar for trying out new stuff.

what I don't like about the affinity series is that they are top loading.. not string through.. though I could mod it.. but that would cost me money..

I have both Squire & MIM Fender Standard Teles. LOVE MY CVC. But I prefer my Squire over the Mex. The Mex was rode hard and put away wet and there are issues with the frets. Both my Squires play well for me. I used the setup from the CVC to match the others. The MIM is still an also ran and may be going down the road unless it becomes a guinne pig for my set ups and pick ups and a refret.

i picked up one of these on sunday, and it is awesome. has your's got a 7.25" or 9.5" fretboard radius? the squier specs, and an old review in a magazine i found says it has the 7.25" radius, but mine has a 9.5" radius...

Neck is clearly fatter than in CV 50, but fretboard feels about same, so i guess it`s 9,5 too.
Neck pocket is tight.

finally I played a great copy of this guitar.. i loved it.. the neck feels awesome, very nice build and pretty solid.. but the p90's aint doing it for me.. it feels and sounds like a humbucker.. and I'm partial to a single coils..
one thing too, is that, the frets are really rough.. I've never encountered a Squier with a nice fret job.. well, except the cv50's and cvc's.. the standards I've played were worse..
anyone had a nice fret out of the box?
