Default pup balance question

Hoping ya'll can help me out here. I put a new pup from a VM tele in the bridge pos on his BSB Affinity. Seems like the middle position is quite a bit quieter than the other two single pups. Is that normal? I know a strat has less volume on positions 2 & 4 than 1,3,5. But not as noticeable as his.

The gtr has an ALLPARTS 3 way switch, wired according to Seymour Duncan's std tele wiring. All 3 positions function, just middle pos is so much quieter it's noticeable. can't switch into pos 2 w/o turning amp up if he's at 10 on pos 1 & 3.

Thanks
Randy

sounds like the new pickup might be out of phase. try switching the two wires. if it is out of phase, that should fix it.

It's been my experience that SD's are out of phase with Fender pickups. I had the same problem installing a Lil 59 in my Tele some years ago.

Okay. I'll try it. I put the white wires where the SD diagram said to, on the switch. The new pup is a Duncan-designed TE101 or whatever, out of a Vintage Mod thinline, apparently. The windings and pup wires are cloth-wrapped - a surprise to me. I better check the squier site, although they used that box shaped switch which went bad almost immediately.

I checked Squier site and the diagram there is for one of those priinted circuit switches in teh VM thinline, not the dual sided thing. At any rate, it shows the white going to the switch, black to ground. SO I have both whites to the switch on opposite sides and opposite ends. With a single jumper connecting the poles in the middle as on the SD diagram. I'll also check the Fender site too

Thanks
Randy

This is the next diagram I'll compare it too, but I think this is how it is wired.

Would agree with that, the instructions with the SSL-5 I fitted state to reverse the wires if used with Fender pups. This ties up with Ghostwolfs' comment above, could be out of phase.

Everything is wired as it should be. Put new heavier strings on last night and with a little more volume from the amp, it's not as bad as we thought - still lower volume in middle position, but not too bad. Could have been we were just messing about with the amp turned down too low to really tell.

Went to a set of 11's on his guitar. Seems to have fattened the tone up nicely from the 9s he was using. But he was breaking 9s on the big bends. I am using 11s and he played my guitar yesteday some and wanted to try the 11's.

Thanks for the replies though.
