Somebody stop me...(Squier Telecaster Custom content)
Hi guys,
I've been looking to add dual a humbucker guitar to my arsenal, and I've looked at mostly mid level Epiphones. Then, I stumbled upon these Squier Tele Customs. I already own two Squiers, so I'm not a victim of the Squier stigma. I am very tempted to order one of these between now and Christmas, and I am hoping someone here can give me some good reasons not to.
It seems these guitars get nothing but good reviews, but are they as good as they seem? Is there any reason Why I shouldn't get one?
The main purpose of me buying it is that I will be playing lead guitar in a band that will be playing mostly Aerosmith, ZZ Top, and AC/DC covers along with some Joe Bonamassa covers. I initially thought Epi was the way to go, but these seem like such a steal. My main concern, being that I won't be able to play one before buying, is I would like to know more about the pickups. Will I be able to nail the Angus Young-style tones I'm after, or will I need to swap pickups?

The humbuckers in mine sound great however I'm more than likely going to replace the 3-way switch and the pots and cap to higher quality ones. Other than that by all means get one. The neck on mine feels just like my mim strat.

I am going to get it from Musician's Friend with a tweed case for $260, thanks to their Fender Sell-abration.

Hmm, that's a good deal. Isn't the guitar like 250 and a tweed case another 150?
Unless it's a tweed gig bag, lol.

the neck profile is very similer to a mim strat with a modern c shape and has a 7.5 " fretboard radius.

No, it's a Musician's Gear Tweed Case. The case is $59 and no discount. The Fender/Squier deal is 20% off, so the Guitar is $200 right now.
Here's the case:

I have a feeling that for $199 you're
gonna be pretty stoked w/ that guitar.
I've always wanted one of those but, as much as i
scour Craigslist on a daily basis, i don't really see 'em.
That's probably a good indicator that
you're gonna be a very happy camper.

I hope so. I'll be sure and post a mini-review of it when it gets here-either on the 24th or 26th.

Sounded good, never took it apart. I got mine used for the record. I've seen the P-90's get better raves.

I know that the P90 version is more popular, and I actually like the sound of it a lot. I just picked this guitar because I was in the market for a humbucker equipped axe and was looking at Epi Les Pauls. I saw both of these, and like the P90s, but really need a good dual humbucker guitar. I do like P90s, and would like to get a gold top Les Paul with P90s somewhere down the road.
One of the things that sold me on the guitar was the fact that for the amazing price, I could upgrade every part on it and stay under the cost of the Epi standards. If I don't really fall in love with the pickups, I plan to put a set of the nickel covered Pearly Gates Seymour Duncans. If I paid full retail, it would bring the price up to $400, still $150 short of the Epiphones.

They sound pretty good IMO, OK clean and plenty of punch with some overdrive in the signal chain. Electronics on mine are dead quiet and +1 on easy to upgrade if needed. I've also got an Epi LP Standard from '96 or so, wasn't sold on the original pups and switched them out with some GFS Fat Pats.

In terms of sound, build quality, and playability, how do they compare?

I have one . I like it . I played the Deluxe II with the P90s but the Deluxe HH sounded better . To other guitars the hums are decent . Mine has a great neck hummer but the bridge is weak. I have a set of GFS Retrotrons I'm gonna throw in it . However I haven't played it in a while since I modded up my 51.
I'd be willing to sell you mine since I've been eyeing a Jagmaster for a bit and if I ever longed to get another they're pretty popular and easy to obtain. It's practically new with the exception of some marks in the pickguard which is normal. 150$ plus shipping from New Jersey . Without the Retrotrons of course . Or I'd trade for a Musicmaster bass ,Venus or Supersonic+ some money . PM if interested.

If I hadn't bought one yesterday from Musician's friend for $200 new with the Fender holiday deal I'd take you up on that...

For sound I would give the nod to the Squier over the original Epi pups, but not the GFS. Build quality and playability are hard to compare as the guitar styles are so different. I like the neck on the Squier better as it's pretty chunky, and the Epi has the slimmer profile (I bought it thinking it would have a '59 roundback style neck, but oh well). Build quality I think the Epi has a much nicer finish, the Squier seems well put together.

Not until your last line about Angus licks did I scream, H*** yeah, dude". If you really can't try it before you buy it then you won't have a problem reselling it. I love my black one with the Duncan designed pickups. I gig often, lead singer, country, rock, blues, etc. 3-way switching adds a lot to what I get done. Keep in touch and let me know how it turns out! Dave in SC

Oh, and if anyone wants to take a look at something on this axe, I got mine delivered UPS Christmas 2010. Factory strings would not stay in tune. At first change a week or so ago, the tuning nuts that hold the tuners in the holes on the face of the headstock had been fingure-tightened only at the factory. Ain't that something? Took an open-ended adjustable wrench and torqued them all down. Love my Squier Custom II with P90's.

dasbill, welcome to the best forum on the net. JMO. You sure know how to wake up the dead. I have been told I NEED a tele. I just don't see it but these do make me drool. Welcome again, hope you enjoy it here. Oh, I was also told I need a guitar with P90s. This could cover both those bases with one rock. Now i've got GAS again!

I have a Squier Tele Custom II P90 guitar since last August. I have played it much, bending notes. Nothing had been falling off, except sweet tones!
Btw for Angus Young sound, get a SG! Epi SG Standard G400 is nice enough.
