Default My NGD scheme

I recently signed up to be part of an online advisory panel for a national retail chain. They reward the panel members during the first week of each month with a code for an Amazon.com credit of $5.00 or more depending on how much we have participated.

Last month I got a code for $5.00 and got an mp3 download of a Jeff Beck live album. Yesterday I got another $5.00 and went shopping but didn't find anything that I felt like I wanted.

This morning it dawned on me that Amazon has guitars.

My plan now is to increase my participation substantially in order to increase my rewards, and sometime in the next few months get a <b>Squier Tele Custom</b> Squier Tele Custom, which will then become the basis for the mod project that I have previously described elsewhere on this forum.

Well, to clarify, here's what I had in mind:

I have also always loved the Schecter Tele lookalikes that Pete Townshend played in the 1980s.

So what came to mind was the idea of modifying a Squier Tele Custom II, something along these lines:

(Mockup done at yajimastringworks.com)
  • Bridge and tuners replaced with black hardware
  • Pickups replaced with EMG or other similar black humbuckers
  • Maybe a bit of relicing (don't crucify me!)
  • I'll probably replace the Custom II knobs with black barrel knobs as well.

Thoughts?
I just like the black on black look. I dunno, I probably won't ever get around to it, and I'm sure I'll love the Custom as-is.

I love the black on black look. I just ordered a black pickguard with black pickups, etc., for my black strat...there's also a black on black squier tele on my local craigslist for $100...

I'd better not go look at that one, or I might not be able to go home again ;>)

I like that black on black. It should be a monster when you get done with it. I have the Custom II and I like the black. I bought it used and the previous owner stripped and tinted the neck so it looks real good against the black body.

I like the mod idea. Go for it if it's what you want. Just one observation though, the modern EMG pickups and the relicing/vintage look are kind of at odds.

I'm not thinking in terms of making it look vintage. The fact that it's a Custom makes me think in terms of it not being a classic Tele, even though I recognize that they have been around for decades. I'm thinking more in terms of it looking like a guitar that's been used hard on a recent tour.

Truth be told, I probably won't relic it at all.

Keep those knobs, they resemble Fender Blackface amp knobs. Kind of Fender signature look. Otherwise, very nice project!

I've never cared for those knobs, to tell you the truth. I plan on going with these:
