The pups in my Cherryburst strat were not bad but I replaced them with 60's Fender re-issues. Compared to the 60's they sound a tad thinner.

I was just looking for that vintage 60's sound, otherwise I would have kept them.

I think they sounded OK. Not the best, but not the worst.

I said "sounded" because I just put in a ceramic HSS setup in my Standard.

I wanted that crunch, I guess.

BTW, I may be interested in parting with the original pickguard & pups (alnico's).

Anyone interested, shoot me a private message.

Sorry...not trying to hijack the thread, dude.

I would say they are pretty good. They are Alnico 5s with the staggered pole pieces. I compared them to several of my strats and liked the tone of them a lot. Both of my Standard Squiers have them and they are a little more noisey than others but that could be the shielding.
I look at it this way. Would you put a 150 dollar set of pickups in a sub 200 dollar guitar. If your answer is no, then there aren't too many low priced pickups that give you the same nice tone.
Now that is my opinion your results may vary.

Believe me or not, I never worried much about the guitar's pickup quality/sound.
That is especially true for most medium/lower end cost guitars.
But I am very concerned about the build quality of the specific instrument.
With low/medium cost guitars that quality tend to vary more than with expensive guitars.

To show you exactly what I mean click on this link:
...you may check other links from there there is more tests.

I think no one can say that Squier Standard (second guitar tested in link) sound bad in comparison to the higher end guitars in test. Considering the buck you gave for it.

As far as the sound you hear as I found out at the Fender forum no two guitars will sound the same even the same model with the same pickups. The sound you hear is attributed to the wood type and fretboard, the pickups, the amp and strings.

I say if it sounds good to you, problem solved.

Bid or buy as many as you want, with so many companies making pickups the choices are many.

Thanks for that demo DKoor..The MIMs sounded more to my liking over the Squiers.I couldn't hear a huge difference between MIM and MIA..

I definitely agree, though I don't believe the difference in sound justifies the price difference. In my own experience, I have found the build quality to be similar, so I would just assume buy the Squier and install a set of $85 tex-mex pups.

I doubt that most audience members can hear differences between different models.

Thanks to you guys... didn't hope to catch so positive response to my initial post.

Now if they only make Squiers with a bit different radius or neck shapes I'd be really tempted to get one (even more than I am now, am gassing Blue Indonesian Deluxe badly).
