2001 Indonesian Standard ?

i need some advice on a std. Squier strat. it's a 2001, made in Indonesia. all the parts appear to be original, bought used from GC. when i got it, the headstock decal had been sanded off, nothing remaining but "made in Indonesia' on the back of the headstock. large headstock, 22 frets, decent sealed tuners, black plastic insert in the truss adjustment hole, rosewood fingerboard. the neck appears to be original, no plugged & re-drilled mounting holes. the only anomaly is the width at the nut, it appears to be the size of an affinity instead of the full size standard. did the specs for this model change since 2001, or have i got a standard from a parrallel niverse?

My '01 Shoreline Gold Standard had the narrow nut, too. I'm not sure what other years did.

if you take off the neck, the body "should" have a crude description of the serial number. my 03 IC Affinity body has a paint knock-out that states IC-NOV-03 where the neck bolts to the body. This may help determine if the serial on the neck corrsponds with the body....and that its not obvious that the body has a different neck. I assume you are measuring a 40mm nut and comparing to a 42mm std nut??

can ya take the neck off easily at this time?? does the body have a date code that corresponds with the SN on the headstock?? IE: IC-XXX-01

Yes - the neck on the Indonesian Standard Strats changed between 1999 and 2000, from the wider (42mm) chunkier neck to the narrower (40-41mm) thinner neck. My 1999 Double Fat Standard (in the pics below) has a wide, chunky neck.

It also changed on the Standard Tele's from 2000 to (I believe) 2003, then it changed back to 42mm. I have a 2002 20th anniversary Squier Standard Tele and it has a 40mm neck width. The good news is that there is enough room to replace the 32mm E-E nut with something wider. I got a GFS 42mm bone nut, which has a 33.6mm E-E spacing... a considerable difference. It still takes a bit of getting used to, but with the wider spacing the neck's very playable.

Heck, according to Dan Erlewine's "Guitar Player Repair Guide", Albert Collins' Tele had a 39.3mm wide neck with a 33mm E-E spacing...didn't hurt his playing any!

Personally, I have no problem with the 40mm wide nut necks. One of my favorite Strats (photo below) has the narrow neck and string spacing.
