I think you're mistaken Squier left production in Japan after the E-series '84-'87.

I don't think so,

1.2.2 Standard Stratocaster
1985 - 1997. This Japanese-built guitar is identical to the American Standard Stratocaster
as introduced in 1986 in the new Corona factory.
Differing Features:
Model no. 027-4600/2, Japan
Head 1 string clamp
Changes over the years:
1988 Locking nut
1989 2nd version, similar to Mexican Standard Stratocaster
but with 2 string retainers
1992 3rd version (?)
1996 only LH version (027-4620)
Basswood body

I love this guitar. Serial no. U004***.
Here is the original pickguard (1995 in lower r-h corner):

Swapped the p/g out for black pearloid:

Looks authentic to me, that little checklist sticker is common on MIJ guitars from at least one contractor.

I've seen the checklists on all sorts of Strats but I wasn't sure. I guess I'd never seen any MIJs later than 1985 and they never had that style of 5-way switch.

Yep they made Squiers after 1985,
I have a Squier Jagmaster made in Japan in 1996 from the Vista series
