Squier Affinity vs. Squier Std vs. Squier Deluxe NECKS
Santa brought me some MF gift certs and I'm looking at new Squiers (what else?), but I'm wondering.... I already own an Affinity which I've modded and it's pretty nice, but I was kinda wanting a Standard or maybe a Deluxe. By just looking at them it seems they have the same neck except the Affinity has 21 instead of 22 frets. Are they same?? Anyone know??

I like the neck on my Affinity better than the one I tried on a Deluxe. I didn't care for the Deluxe at all...it just didn't feel good to me. Maybe it was a dud, who knows. Have you tried a CV yet? I'd put that Christmas cash toward a new Classic Vibe if it were in my stocking. The CV line is several steps up from any other Squier I've played.

Hi KevinV, Actually I've had my CV 50s for several months now. I love it. I'd also love a CV 60s, but I don't quite have enough for it. I have a black Affinity with the maple neck and I love the way it plays. A lot of people complain about the Affinity neck, but with a good setup it plays great.

Well, Dean, since you've already got some nice guitars and aren't in a pinch to get one, I'd save those gift certificates and add a little cash to the kitty here and there. MF sales are inevitable all year round. As soon as I had enough cash, I'd snag the CV60's. I've played a few and the fit and finish were as nice as the CV50's. I'd go for quality over quantity. Just my 2 cents.

I have a 2008 Squier Deluxe Stratocaster and it's fantastic. The finish is immaculate not a defect to be found anywhere. The frets are properly shaped with no rough edges and the satin neck as quick as lightning. The tuners hold well needing no upgrade and the Duncan Designed pickups will suffice for even the most finicky ears. The tone is true "vintage Fender" and I believe superior to ths Vibe Series. I declare it's the best value in the Squier line, a "sleeper" if there ever was one and vastly under-rated. At $249.00 - $279.00 it's a guitar for the budget minded guitarist.
Try the Squier Deluxe Stratocaster with different amps as my squier Tele Custom like the squier Deluxe Strat really came alive once plugged into my Crate 1512 "V" Series tube amp. Sometimes, more often than not it's NOT the guitar or pickups, it's the amp that is lacking.

The Affinity neck has a 41mm nut width. Both the Standard and Deluxe models have a 42mm nut width. That alone makes both the Standard and the Deluxe more attractive to me.
Personally, I like the smaller headstock design of the Deluxe over the Standard.
My question would be: what is the body thickness of the Deluxe? Is it the full 1 3/4" thickness like a Fender Standard Strat, or is it only 1 1/2" thick like the Affinity? (The Standard is indeed 1 3/4" thick.)
If it were me, I'd choose between the Deluxe and a Classic Vibe 50s.

Something else to keep in mind is that the current Standard and Deluxe models have two point trem units. If you want the vintage trem, you'll need to look into the Bullet/Affinity/CV models. I have a 2004 Affinity Strat and I really like the narrower nut and Alder body. Even with a 1 5/8" body and zinc block, it stills weighs in at 8 lbs. Out of curiousity, does anyone actually play on the 22nd fret?

Interesting that you are asking about guitars that really do have 3 different kinds of necks...
Affinity necks (as you would know) are rather thin, fast, and satin finished. Depending on the age of the guitar (and where they are manufactured) the profile can change a bit. I have a 99 Affinity with a neck that I love, and also had an 08 Affinity with a neck that looked STUNNING, but was just too thin.
The Deluxe has a very interesting neck. The profile is listed as C, but I would say it's very much on the border between a C and a D profile. The fretboard is rather flat. I actually heard someone once compare it to a classical acoustic, and it does have some of that feel to it. It's also worth noting that the Deluxe has a 1-piece maple neck (no glued-on fretboard) and rolled edges.
I'm not sure about Standards.
Also, re: the CV's. I have found the strat necks to be ok in terms of profile, but I really can't stand the heavy gloss finish. I get stuck.

my sausage-like fingers love the Deluxe neck...probably why it is getting more playing time than that of the others...I MAY just break down and buy a Deluxe neck to put on the CV 60's...do they even sell them separately?

That's an interesting observation since the Deluxe has a 9 1/2" fretboard radius, which is the same as the Affinity and the Standard (and just about every non-vintage-reissue Stratocaster made since 1987.) I don't think it feels anything like my acoustic, and it definitely doesn't feel like a classical.

The Deluxe does have a full size body. You can put in a full size trem block and it doesn't hang out the back. 1.75'' It looks like a strat feels like a strat, and sounds like a stat. I think it is the best Squier made at this time, but I could be prejudiced. I own one.
