Listening test: Can you tell which Squier Strat is which?
i just recorded 4 of my Squier Strats into Garageband using the same settings (Line 6 UX-1 with Tweed Bassman amp and some reverb into Garageband).
See if you can tell which one is which, since I scrambled the order. The Strats are:
Mexican Squier Strat, with Tonerider Classic Blues pickups
Bullet Strat with D Allen CS Austin Blues pickups
Classic Vibe 50s with stock pickups
Bullet Strat with D Allen JM Rock & Blues pickups
but remember, I scrambled the order....let your ears decide.

Wow, they all sound pretty good. Just very subtle differences with my iPod headphones. Maybe I'll grab my sc3's and listen again.

OK, no way I can tell but here is my order of preference, but they all sounded really good.
4 & 3
1
2
I will guess that 4 and 3 were the Mex and the CV, just cuz I think both use tone riders.

How does spamming the forum with ads for your products add to this (or any) discussion?

i agree. perhaps D Allen gets a bit over-zealous about his new line of pickups, but there might be a more tactful way to make the point.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but 90% of his posts are ads for his web site or his new pickups or something along those lines. I'm not sure, but that probably violates the forum's terms of use policy. For some reason, he gets a pass. Can you imagine if the guys from GFS or Stew Mac were on here selling their products?

I hear you, and you have a valid point. I guess the moderators should pipe in.

1-Stock Squier CV50
2-Mex Squier with Toneriders
3-CS Austin Blues
4-JZ Rock & Blues
The last two seemed better and I'm guessing they were the D. Allen PUPs... but I'm dunno which one is which...
If I'm completely wrong... oh F*CK... please let me not be retarded tone deaf...
10mins later...
crud...
Now I think
1-CS Austin Blues
2-Toneriders
3-JZ Rock & Blues
4-Stock CV50
or the same but backwards
Crap... I don't think I know at all... further more I can't keep pressing play over and over... my brain will hurt...
I give up...
All I know is there is a significant difference in the quality of that Stratty spank... but that might peskypesky's fingerpicking good licking... and the Bass and Mid tones... but I can't seem to get my head to remember which sound was which and every time I play it I get more confused. I have to say the drum beat in the background doesn't help as your timing differs between samples.
Or maybe I suck...

Great playing by the way...all 4 sound pretty good. I'd be happy with any of those setups in my Strats.

I'm with Papa Joe on this one 4 sounded the best and although 2 sounded thinner, I liked it also.
Are you going to reveal which is which?

I have NO affiliation with D.Allen, bit IMHO, they are the best priced tonally excellent pups I have used. I have the CS JM 60's RnB's and they are stellar and I have used GFS, Fender CS etc etc....for the money, a great alternative to dumping major scratch.
Rant ended.
BTW, it helps to have an experienced and skillful player handling the equipment as well..good job pesky!
