Default What kind of pickups?

I have a Squire Affinity and wondered what kind of pickups you experts might recommend?

I have been toying with idea of a Seymour Duncan JB Jr on the bridge. Pricey for sure.

I read about GFS here on the board, but though some people swear by them, and the price is right, I've read some lackluster reviews.

How's Lace pickups? Guitar Center has them on sale for $159 for a set.

I'm thinking of doing them one at a time since I need to raise the money for each one.

Sorry if this thread is common, at least it seems it should be but I could not find this specific question.

I'm pretty new, so far I am learning Santana, specifically Samba Pa Ti. Also play some distorted stuff but no heavy metal, yet.

I just want better pickups than the stock ones.

Thanks!

Walter

Really depends on the sound that you want. I have a SD tele Hotrails in my Squier BSB that I am very pleased with. Also got the GFS premium Texas in yesterday for my 96 strat. Just a little more soldering to go and hopefully they will sound as good as people say.

I'm thinking about getting one of these for the neck of my Bullet. It's the Duncan Performer Scorcher it's like a rail humbucker.I've got a humbucker made by them in the bridge, and once i got it wired up right it sounds pretty good for a cheap pick-up.Just scroll down to the Scorcher pickup.I've got the one below it as my bridge pup.

I've checked out the GFS website a little more and I take back what I said, now I'm thinking about The Neovin pickups. The price sure is right.

Anyone use neovins or heard pro or con about them?

GFS pups are a good buy,I have several and they all sound fine but if you want something a little more exotic without a huge cash outlay this would be my recomendation. You can e-mail Pete and tell him what your looking for and he will pick the right ones for you.His customer support is outstanding.I misplaced the mounting hardware for a pup that I bought from him and e-mailed him for help.In less than 4 hours he answered and said he would send what I needed.Should be here tomorrow..

They do have a certain attractive side to them. Keep in mind that with the Neovins they need to be close to the strings to get the proper response out of them. Also remember that the Neovins are essentially a stacked underwound humbucker.

I have used (powered by) Lace humbuckers and they are decent for the money. I have heard good things about the Lace gold set as well as the Holy Grail set.

I put a set of those GFS Premium Texas Stagger Alnicos in one of my Squiers and I've been very favorably impressed by them. Definitely an excellent value for the $$$.

Nearly got a set of GFS pickups. Those guys have great response time on email questions. However, there was a Seymour Duncan JB Jr bridge model on ebay for $49.99 just now and I got it. Couldn't resist. Can't wait to receive it.

I did upgrade my neck pickup to a 6.5k from Pickers Parts and it sounds great.

I still owe you guys some pics.

I highly recommend D Allen pickups. I have two sets and they are both delicious.

I think they're better than my set of Toneriders. And much better than the GFS Premium Alnicos I have.

Nice. I really like that sustain, and that smooth cutting butter with a warm knife sound. Thanks Pesky.

I just ordered some clearance pups from GFS for my Bullet, at less than $50.00 you can't beat them. Now, if it were my standard I would go ahead and follow pesky's advice and go with the D. Allen's.
