i love the recent Squier Bullets. can't say anything about the older ones, but i've bought two 2008s and on 2009 Bullet and I love all three. after a proper set-up they are really good guitars. even 100% stock they play well and sound good.
but what's really cool is that they're great modding platforms. you can get one and then start upgrading parts as you desire. alnico pickups, tuners, electronics, nut, tremelo, whatever. you can really personalize a Bullet to your own specs. and you can also sell the neck if you want and replace it with another neck more to your liking.

I have an older Chinese hardtail strat and it's pretty amazing as I only paid $35.00 used for it, the neck is nice for something this cheap. It came with ceramic pickups which were decent although I have replaced them with Alnico's.
Aside from the cheap plywood body it does not sound like a cheap guitar and it is my go to guitar as I really don't care about getting it scuffed or dropping it, it also weighs much less than my standard strat, and that's a bonus.

I think they are a great guitar. I played one at a local chain store and the neck was great. The finish was good. The only thing I did not care for were the pickups. They are very bright, or what I call twangy. That is something that is personal taste. You might like the bright pups. Pesky said it best. Great guitars at a price that lets ya make all kinds of changes that won't break the bank.

I just got one a week ago,and all in all it's a good guitar, but the tuning knobs on mine don't like to keep the guitar in tune.I'm ordering some new ones tomorrow. They are the Fender locking ones the Musician's Friend sales. After that it should be really nice.

I bought a black one off CL for $50 almost 2 weeks ago with the intention of painting it the real Daphne Blue, and doing some other mods to it like putting on Kluson tuners.
Got it home and it sounded so good and played so well, that I have changed my mind about painting it. Sweet little guitar. Who would have guessed??
stuggy,
What part of KY are you from? I'm from the Paducah area and planning on retiring back home in a year or two.

Usually if the guitar doesn't stay in tune the problem is in set up. Tuners don't slip that much. In cheap guitars the tuners might be tough (cranky or low ratio enough) to use anyways, so it's good to change them.

The tuners that come on most Bullets I've seen really are poo-poo. Those "trapezoid" back tuners are junk. It is definitely worth changing them out for something better. The Wilkinson vintage-Kluson style tuners GFS sells are a pretty good choice as they don't usually require any reaming or changing of the bushings and usually cover up all but one of the original screw holes.

i guess i'm the party-pooper again, because i listened to all the people dissing the stock Bullet tuners. i replaced them with some Kluson-style tuners and don't notice any difference other than that they look cool. what difference was i supposed to notice?

Hopefully easier to get in tune. On cheap ones if you go sharp you need to turn them back over half a turn to tune back up to pitch because of loose backlash in the gears. A good tuner may only need to be backed off a tiny fraction of a turn to tune back up. As far as staying in tune probably no diff. The time probably only matters when you are standing in front of an audience.

The stock trapezoid tuners seem loose and wiggly to me, especially when unstrung. They also seem to get more so very quickly over time and seem to wear out quickly. Even if they seem to stay in tune under normal use they seem to cause more tuning instability than other types with trem usage.
FWIW, I never liked the "genuine" Klusons all that much, many of them on older guitars I had the same kind complaints about looseness and cheap feel as with the trapezoids. The Wilkinson vintage-Kluson style tuners on the other hand are surprisingly tight and smooth. I put a set on my "Gilmourized" black strat just for the looks and was surprised at how nice they were. Way better than any "genuine" Klusons I've ever used. Your mileage may vary with other brands of Kluson look-alikes, as you don't specify whether yours were Wilkinsons or not.
